Wondering if anyone has any experience with the quality of the A&I replacement water pumps available for the Model "50", "520", and "530"? I know that Deere now owns A&I. My JD dealer service manager recommends getting a new A&I water pump rather than rebuilding my original unit (B2668R).

I do not have experience with A&I's pumps. If you can rebuild the pump you have, then it may be a good idea. I have rebuilt a radiator on a 1948 A with an A&I core with great success. It did not even leak after the rebuild using the A&I gaskets and a small bead of black permatex goo. The water pump seals can be matched up through www.mcmaster.com but I would go to Deere if at all possible. The last Johnson add-on water pump I rebuilt had a John Deere bearing in it. Someone had machined the pump to accept the new bearing and to this day it does not leak. It supprised me at how easy and fun it was to rebuild. A great learning experience. By the way, for you fellas with Johnson water pumps, half of it is what came out of an old Studebaker which can still be bought new on the market.

What makes your pump un-rebuildable? Is it eroded on the casting? The pumps are so dog gone simple, that if you buy the bearing/shaft (one piece), a seal, and an impleller, you would have repaced all the moving parts. The last pump I rebuilt (70D) I was surprised at how inexpensive the shaft/bearing was. I think it was under $12.00 The impleller might have been $50. Not sure you can beat that with an A&I pump. You can easily press those together yourself. I did one in the field using a bottle jack and pressing the pump up against the drawbar frame.

I have no expereicne with those A&I pumps, thogh I have used other parts from A&I, typically radiator cores, and they worked fine for me. If you decide to go the A&I route, post back what you think as it would be good feedback for everyone here to know.

On my early 50 I had one of those pumps. I machined the casting smooth again, but then the seal didn't have enough spring pressure anymore due to changing the height. So I then made a stainless steel spacer washer and put under the seal on the impeller side and it seals up now. I can't remember for sure I may of had to epoxy that spacer in to seal it to the impeller. One the later pumps I resurface the impeller where the seal rides and puts a groove in them and have had good luck with that. On one the press fit to the shaft was too loose and it walked back some after time and started leaking so I had to get a new impeller that's about the only trouble I have had with used implellers.

If the machine surface of the impeller where the seal rides is rough or pitted a machine shop can mill it off smooth again.
