JD 620 Power Steering UPDATE

Mike M....,F-I-T and others.

Took the Pedestal assembly off today. Disassembled and cleaned each part.

Went to the JD dealer and ordered the rebuild parts...will be in Wed. afternoon. 50 year old tractor and all parts were available !!

I could tell the pedestal had been worked on at some time in the past and it was time for another rebuild. No broken parts... just normal wear.

Question....what's the best way to get the Vane Seals around the Steering Vanes ?? Would soaking in hot water help ??

Mike,

You guessed it..... ...separate parts !! Don't tell me they are cheaper in the kit form.....

Both the vane seals broke when taking them off for cleanup..... .I attributed that to being old, dried and cold.

I'm not certain that you save any money by buying the kit as opposed to buying just the parts that you need. The kit includes quite a few items that you have probably already replaced on the pump and lines. It won't be much difference in money compared to the shop labor you are saving.

Did they get you the complete seal kit or the seperate parts ? Some don't know there is a complete kit. When I have done my vane seals I took them to the kitchen sink and we have an instant hot water tap. I put them in this hot water and soaped them up with dish soap and then worked them on using a small pocket screwdriver that is well worn smooth on the corners. It takes some pressure and it seems like they will tear ,but they haven't yet.

Frank,

Just got back from checking the pins with the magnifying glass and no cracks or problems with the stop dowel pins.

No scoring of the bottom of the cylinder. Mine has the (Improved Design) vane pin with the top collar....I suppose to eliminate the scoring problem.

Oh, that's right. Yours is a later -20. Yes they had some issues with the floating pins so they finally went to a capped pin.

I drop mine in a pan of boiling water, let them warm up for a couple of minutes. It seems to make them more pliable. Did you see any evidence of a cracked/broken stop dowel pin? They quite often are. Any evidence of the floating vane pin dragging on the bottom of the cylinder causing an undercut? On the ones that I do, I make a small notch in the pin end, then form a small pip at the bottom of the bore. Then I file and work this until the pin will drop in and rest on the pip, but not touch the bottom by a few thousandths, checking with a steel shim. This way it will never rub on the cylinder face and cause a wear pattern in the future.
