I’m happy to report my JD 620 power steering is working GREAT !!

I started this project by putting new bearings and seals in the power steering pump and testing with a pressure gage showed excellent pressure.

Next I rebuilt the Pedestal and cylinder…installing new vane seals and all O-rings and gaskets.

Then I moved on to the actuating valve assembly and cleaned and polished each part and installed several times…..with poor steering. Then I ordered a new worm shaft and cam and installed them after very precise adjusting………..still poor steering.

The part of the system that wasn’t rebuilt was the steering valve housing and flow control valve……so I concentrated on this area.

Got the Green Magazine out and started calling parts suppliers and found out that the first three I called didn’t have any good valves and they said from their experience 90% of them are no good and a good one would be hard to find. I then called “Sharps” in Missouri and talked to Donny who said he had a good one which came off a tractor with a tore up transmission. I ordered the part Monday and received it on Thursday even though the state was in the middle of an ice storm. (Thanks Donny).

Put the part on this morning and instant success!! One finger steering at any speed …very smooth….no flutter. Mike M said he had experience with some spool valves and housings causing problems…..right on Mike!

I bought this tractor as a project and I also wanted to know how the steering worked and what it all looked like inside…..what an education and a great feeling knowing everything is up to spec and working so well.

Now I need to give well deserved THANKS to the many people who helped with this steering rebuild. I received calls, e-mails and many postings on the YT board from so many people wanting to share their knowledge and experience .

Frank (F-I-T), Mike M, 71INT, Tom 43 and others helped by posting long detailed explanations of each process I went through in the rebuild. Many of you invested a lot of time in this project and I hope you can understand the good feeling I have knowing how it turned out. Between the service manual the I&T manual and all your posting I completely understand the steering system and would encourage others to go ahead and rebuild their 2-cyl steering systems.

Merry Christmas, Rich (LittleD)

Great job: those Power Steerings are a smorgasboard of troubleshootings. Makes sense that the relief valve could have been the problems. Glad you got it repaired properly....

Glad you got it going !

Now your the "go to" guy on these steering systems ! LOL. One heck of a learning experience isn't it ?

Wonder if there are any companies who can rebuild those control valve spools ? Someone on one of these boards likely works at such a shop.

Rich:

Good for you! I would like to understand what it is that goes wrong in the spool valves or relief valves that make 90% of them bad. I've never had one that could not be rebuilts, so any insight there would be very helpful. i have heard of a spring in a relief valve break and a chunk of it jammed the relief open so that there was no assist.

Later,

Frank

Frank; What I have suspected on some of these is that the spool valve and housing get wear that must by-pass oil back to the reservior and or not control the flow of oil correctly. I had noticed a variation in them as to the amount the valve closes off the ports in the centered position.I think they are to still flow a trace to each side of the cyl. when centered ? some I have seen had more gap than others.

A friend of mine once for some unknown reason thought he would champher the edges of that spool valve. Well he soon learned he just ruined it ! Lucky for him I had an extra around and that fixed him right up.

I would buy that explanation as we used a ton of linear hdraulic spool valves in our horizontal traversing head mills. However, I'd still like to see Rich remove the relief valve components, springs, spool, and the actuator valve springs, spool, etc., and post some photos. I tohught he had said that he had gone thorugh that valve, but now I wonder if the relief valve side was not opened up, just adjusted. One of any of the many springs in there if broken, would explain a lot...
