Zinc being taken out of new oil formulations

I have been reading on some other boards that I visit about concern with the new oil formulations and reduced levels of zinc and phosphate. The government has mandated those reduced levels because it damages catalytic converters. Modern roller cam engines don't need as much zinc and phosphate in the oil they use. Apparently without enough zinc and phosphate there can be excessive camshaft wear in older flat tappet engines. I haven't seen much talk about this here, so I thought I would ask about it. I don't know how much concern we should have with tractor engines that have much lower rpm and less valve spring pressure. Any thoughts out there? The web site link is to an article in the Dayton Daily News about an entrepreneur who arranged to produce and market oil made to the old specs for zinc and phosphate.

I don't know what it is about Lucas engine oil stabilizer, but I have 2 older flat lifter engines that are over 204,000 miles and ok so far.

GM just had an artical about this in their Tech News flyer. I wonder if it is available online somewhere ? Too much zinc caused other problems too in the old days. Now there is other additives in the oil for corrosion protection and any oil meeting the starburst specs. will protect from undue wear, maybe unless you have extra high lifts and strong springs.

This topic has been discussed on the tractor talk forum at great length in the past (My posts were LOOOOONG). Search for ZDDP.

Oils to SF, and SJ are still on the shelves and those standards require the higher levels of ZDDP for older engines.

Just remember that the DNR, EPA, and CARB agencies like old engines to croak because they can't go back and make old engines pollute less, only new engines. An indirect attack through the oil make speed up engine replacement.

There have been ZDDP additives available from GM for rebuilt engine break in and some racing oils have lots of ZDDP. The motor honey's that I've checked, have very little ZDDP, mostly are heavy oil. Check their MSDS for such information.

This is true. I work at Perkins Motor Service and we sell Valvoline. The Valvoline rep was telling us about the lower levels of zinc in the oils today. I know a guy that works for Harland Sharp roller rockers in Strongsville Oh. He told me one of the last oils to have higher levels of zinc and one that they recommend for their rockers in h.p. engines is Shell Rotella.

I had heard about others switching to Rotella also. But then the ZDDP in Rotella was reduced also. I know some folks who were stocking up on the old formula Rotella before it was all sold out. It is easy to recognize the new Rotella because the appearance on the containers was changed.
