John Deere A Governor Gear

I replaced the governor gear on my JD A, it ran well for a few hours. The connection between the fan shaft gear and the back of the governor gear jumped and cracked the housing where the fan shaft connects tothe governor gear. Is there an alignment that I missed on this that would have caused this?

i tried your email, but the msg was rejected as undeliverable.. The A is a 6 spd, so I believe it is a '41 or later, and it has an angle iron frame, so it is likely pre '46. the serial tag is bad, so I don't know for sure. It is an all fuel, the engine is free, but i have no idea if it has the original all fuel pistons in it. It will be probably 2 weeks before i get it home to start disassembly, weather permitting.

I just bought a 6 speed long hood "A" that I intend to part out. Should have it home in the next couple of weeks. I might be able to help you out w/ parts if you need some, and they"ll be reasonable.

I believe all Frank said n would just add even if you wanna replace them with a used gear set (of course new matched set is best but cost is pretty salty) GET A MATCHED SET FROM THE SAME TRACTORS FAN SHAFT AND GOVERNOR GEAR. Theres a better chance they will marry up n mesh n perhaps not whine too bad (depends on how worn) provided you set the heels and then the backlash correct when you do the next rebuild. One thing I neglected in my last rebuild was the governor weight pins, if youre in there do it right cuz you only wanna do it ONCE. Problem with so many used sets I looked at before was they were worn down so sharp you could shave with them and they would yield excess backlash

Probably from the mismatched gear set. If the governor shaft gear had been really worn, low teeth, and the replacement gear had high teeth, and the heel was too tight, once the new teeth wore sharp, one could have shed half a tooth, it filled the node, the next tooth tried to crawl over it. Or, after a few hours of running, the new gear teeth wore down to the point that they just crawled over, but I would lean towards the gear shed a tooth that filled the groove, and the next tooth crawled over it and the interference was so great that the casting cracked. That's why they sold them in pairs, and why you have to set the heel and lash carefully, just like doing a ring and pinion set in a rear end.

There have been pretty thorough discussions on the setting of the gears several times over the years. You might want to take a stroll through the archives.
