Well, starting my first jd restification, I have an r diesel with a gas pony motor, the starter ring on the diesel flywheel is bad but both motors run, My first question is there is not an engine kit here at YT, for the diesel engine, does anyone know where i can get one, and has anyone changed the starter ring on the r diesel engine? Thanks in advance for any direction.

Worked great guys, was able to turn the ring around and and re-adjusted engagement and It works excellent, started the pony and it fired the diesel right up, everything sounds good and even though it hasnt been run for any lenght of time in over 30 years it didnt smoke blue or white at all, as soon as it started and leveled out it didnt smoke at all, Might just run the motor the way it is, only gonna use it for shows and such. Is there anything about this model tractor that I need to know, or to watch out for? Im 34 years old, this tractor was parked before I was born so I dont know much about them.

Thank you all for the info, I will check out the ring and see if I can use the suggestions. That would be nice if I could do that, I need to get the fluids changed along with the filters and run the diesel some, i may be able to get by with the engine the way it is until more parts are available. Thanks again, Im sure Ill have more questions.

On the ring gear on the flywheel. Take a 1/4 flat bar about 6 inches long and a hammer and knock the ring off. Turn the ring around. To get the ring back on heat the ring with a torch and it will fall on the flywheel. It does not take much heat for it to go back on. This is why I always hold the decompression lever till the flywheel stops so it won't stop in the same place all the time.

When I was working on mine a year ago or so I looked high and low for repro pistons. Had a couple places tell me they were in the works but not yet available. Might be around somewhere by now. I ended up leaving mine standard, but had to put wider rings in the top 2 grooves as they were pretty worn. Can order whatever rings you want through Hastings. Valves, guides, and rod bearings are still available at Deere($$$). Can get head gasket set from Deere also. Has most everything in it. No gasket btwn block and crankcase though(That was a fun one to make!). Good luck. The R was my first Deere resto also.

for engine kit for an R you have the choice of rering or get lucky enough to find a set of used .045 over pistons.next step is to bore over 3/8" to 720 pistons.other options include resleeve or to have custom pistons built ( expensive)all other gaskets sand misc should be available at deere.Paul

I assume the problem is the ring gear (F2265R) is damaged in two places where the starter engages most of the time. Is there any way you can remove the ring gear turn it 1/4 turn and reinstall it or is it beyond use no matter what?

It might be that if the ring gear has teeth worn down from the drive gear your pony clutch is not set right, I think it is 1 3/8" on the adjusting bolts. Because mine does not grind when i engage the pony clutch lever until it is pulled all the way back. My two cents worth with change
