Still having no luck with getting the 400 to move. Tested the reverser pressure and got 0 for forard and reverse , runs fine and hydraulics work fine. All linkages are attatched and everything appears to be adjusted correstly. Any input???

Initial problem was a lack of brakes. Reverser was only removed due to the length of the bolts that hold it along with the brake control assy. on. Was off for a few weeks while i collected parts for the brake control rebuild. Sat in my garage nice and safe. Reassembled with new gaskets from the dealer (looked correct) now has no pressure to reverser. Thats why it's so baffling as i didn't mess with anything on the reverser.

I"ll check out the clutch adjustment in the A.M. No problem on being stumped...i"m here to look at it and it"s still puzzling. I greatly appreciate the help. I"ll keep you posted. Hopefully something will go right around here this week. Had a guy manage to get permission to hunt a spot that i have hunted solo for a few years now. Wouldn"t be such an issue if he hadn"t taken 3 deer using illegal methods this week. I talked to the property owner about it. It"s never as much fun when others don"t play by the rules. Leaving a big pile of fresh apples in a field front of your stand may fly in other states but here it"s cheating.

How do you have your clutch pedal adjusted?? The top of the pedal should not contact the throw-out bearing when you press down the pedal at the top of travel..The throw-out bearing should make contact with the clutch fingers at the bottom of the pedal travel..You should feel only spring tension for the top 5-6 inches of pedal travel..The bottom of pedal travel should just disconnect the clutch for cold weather starts..Sorry...I'm grabbing at straws now..Without being there I'm kinda stumped..

maybe take a step back and tell what exactly you removed and why it was removed. What was the initial problem?

 ????????? in reply to scooter01922, 12-21-2007 18:46:06
It does indeed have 2 ports on that side of the pump, it doesn't really make sense to me either. Pressure readings taken at the forward and reverse test ports on top of the reverser indicate 0 regardless of rpm. The reverser supply test port (the one on the back of it) is unfortunately inaccessible without removing a hyd line that goes from the "reverser charge pressure” line to the hyd filter. and that would really defeat the purpose as I couldn’t start it with the line off. After pulling that plug partially and starting the tractor I can tell you there certainly isn't 100 PSI there with it running anyway. I'm at the second job now, so all tinkering will have to wait till tomorrow. Good to see I’m not the only one stumped on how the hydraulics still work.

I can't imagine how the hydraulics are fine without reverser pressure..The hydraulics are fed from the reverser oil..Does your hydraulic pump have 2 small ports on the starter side of the hydraulic pump?? Upper port is main hydraulic pressure being generated by the pump ,the lower one [if it has one ] is the charge pressure from the reverser.. You should have over 100 lbs there at 1000 rpm..Please tell us exactly where you are taking your pressure reading on the reverser..

Try adjusting the clutch linkage, even though you might have not adjusted it before or not. I worked on a 400 earlier this year and operators said it drives great but wouldn't pull itself up a small incline. The linkage on the clutch was rusted up and not moving like it should, not allowing enough pressure to the clutch. Try checking pressure without the clutch hooked up or the pin that was mentioned by Jonathan and see if pressure developes. Just a thought, or was there a serial number break on the parts that maybe the wrong gasket was installed or an oring forgotten. Not being smart just trying to help. chris

Keep those suggestions coming, even if you think it might be a stupid suggestion. I"m ready to try anything to get it working before we get more snow. 2 + feet on the ground so far. I"m sure some of you have more but i"m just about had my fill of shoveling for the year. I"ll go mess with the clutch tomorrow.

The shaft that runs under the reverser that connects the clutch pedal to the reverser control valve is hollow and is joined to the small shaft that protrudes from the control valve by a solid pin. Look closely at the joint where the two shafts are joined and make sure they are both rotating simultaneously. The pin tends to break or fall out and everything "looks" good until its examined closely. How did this start ? Gradually or just when it was started one day ?

Thanks for the reply but that shaft is fine. Tractor would move before i had to remove the brake control housing along with the reverser and now strangely enough it just won"t budge. I didn"t actually do anything to the reverser while it was off and i know everything is hooked up so??? Pressure reads 0 at all ports on the reverser, yet all other hydraulics work fine.

Gee that was easy.. in reply to scooter01922, 12-22-2007 15:56:49
It works... a bit of messing around with it and it finally moves. To those that suggested i check the linkages, thanks. Even though i had already checked everything several times that"s what it was. Specifically it was the pin in the linkage that runs from the clutch across to the reverser. It did have a pin but it was a tad on the loose side. Installed a tighter pin and presto....it drives. Unfortunately the first time i hit the brakes it held for a sec then the petals went to the floor. I just replaced all the check valves in the whole darn brake control valve so i just don"t know. Maybe i"ll just send it off to the friendly service department. On the upside the tractor made short work of the 4 foot iced up snowbanks around the driveway.
Thank you to all
Scott
