JD 620 clutch problems........

Got the power steering on the JD 620 all rebuilt and working great. Thought I'd check out the clutch to see why it wouldn't adjust right. Bought the tractor from "Doc" in Illinois who said he rebuilt the clutch. To my surprise one of the castings holding the clutch dogs and toggle was broken and all the pieces were removed and the pulley was put back on and was running on two of the 3 clutch dogs. Hope “Doc” can sleep at night.

Checking for a replacement pulley I found a used one for $575….. and a rebuilt ? one with steel casting ears from (Denglers) for $645.

How unsafe was it to run with only two toggles in the clutch and how many tractors are out there running only two? The parts suppliers I’ve called say a lot of the clutch pulleys are broken.

Any thoughts as to what route I should take in getting the clutch operating correctly. Anyone with experience using Denglers pulley?

Thanks, Rich

He did take the reduction cover off for some reason but he didn't say why.

I'm going to try and repair it myself...I need a challenge.... I'll make or buy a pivot and install it.

Thanks, Rich

I would look around. I'll bet you can find a pulley with good ears in it that will function fine for you for a lot less than you have been finding. I've looked at the Dengler's pulley and it looks great, but I have not had the need to install new pivots in a pulley. I have always been able to over bush them, weld them up, mill the down, and move on. Can you buy just one pivot from Dengler's, then mill yours down, drill the holes and bolt it in? That might be a fix.

I do like that Muggy weld rod, since it is not so darn hard as nickle, and it acts like cast iron in machining. Shame you don't have the pieces. It's a lot of rod to built up the ears. You can build a little form out of copper blocks and that will hold the weld in place and not sitck until you build up a boss big enough to machine.

Or maybe he does have the pieces ? and they are laying in the bottom of the reduction cover ?

I also wonder if the clutch driver is going on back too far if that causes those to get broken off. Not alot of clearance behind there on a 60,620,630 then other models have.

It's too bad the parts are gone. I've welded the ears back on using nickle rod, peening as I go. They haven't broken back off yet, and I don't really think I'm the most knowledgeable weldor.

Maybe someone who knows his welding could put on some steel ears for you. Jim

Try Darwin Ginerich in Moundridge, Ks. 620-386-0071. He is a good guy and gets the parts out fast and is reasonable. I just bought a shaft for the brakes on my 620 from him so I know he has a 620 apart.

You want a scam? Denglers is a good example of a scam. Their prices are absolutely ridiculous. Try two cylinder plus or triple g service

What a scam of a sale...I believe I'd call the seller and request some adjustment. It's not only a money scam to do that but risky to a potential user. I would say try nickel rod except that a breakage could recult in disaster of the worst kind. Just a small piece of loose steel could cause in the wrong spot could cause a clutch seizure, never experienced one but have heard of them resulting in a run away tractor. I believe I would check with Two Cylinder parts, David Marlin and also there is a place in Kanola, Iowa that lists parts on ebay. I know they are reputable as a friend bought from them. Good luck.

The "fun" continues ! I have seen Dengler's ads for years on those pulleys and wondered why only the 620-630 are affected ? I'm betting he has someone else fix them for him. Likely any good shop can do it. Get some of that muggy weld rod F-I-T uses and try it yourself. I would only use Dengler as a last resort as there has to be some cheaper out there somewhere. Give a call to Allen Machine in Tenn. that makes the taper-locs for him maybe they do those too ?

I would be interested in knowing why the 620 and 630 were affected also? I know my 630 had one of the 3 Clutch Operating Bolts (JD term)froze in place and the clutch was able to pull the tractor but that was about all. I wonder if it wouldn"t have broke the casting had I continued to use it. I had to use a sledge and plenty JB80 to get the old bolt out. The bolts were $18 each in 2001. I wonder how much they are now? At least they are available.

It would be similar to driving your vehicle with
one of the wheels off, running on 3 wheels and
one brake drum or rotor.

I would try it if someone was shooting at me, but realize at best its going to cost me a lot very soon and at worst it won't work at all.

Good Luck.

I would be careful dealing with Dengler. I have had some problems with his honesty. I have dealt with Marlin's at two cyl. parts in missouri several times and I would deal with them again. I have always been satisfied.
