My John Deere 720 gas motor won't turn over. I rebuilt a worn out starter and it spins when the bendix isn't engaged, but otherwise it just makes a clunking sound and the clutch pulley just barely moves. The clutch is disengaged, but it acts like it is in gear.
Is it possible that the transmission is stuck in a gear? Can the shifter slip out of the slot on a fork? Help!

Jim,
I had a similar problem on a John Deere 70 Gas Standard several years ago. After removing the starter three times, not a pleasant job, I had a friend push the starter pedal while I was under the tractor looking at the starter engage the ring gear. The problem was the drive on the starter. It appeared to lock and override when the starter was off the tractor. However, the added resistance when engaged in the flywheel caused the drive to release inside the drive. At the time John Deere was the only supplier for the starter drive. This was another unpleasant experience to the tune of about $200. The problem you describe sounds very similar. Good luck.

You can get a bendix from a starter repair shop. I replaced mine on My gas 70 last year. The shop got me a genuine Delco unit he had to order out of Canada fo $45. Hope this will help. They can get pretty chewed up on the gear.

Can you spin the clutch pulley by hand? If so then your tranny should be in neutral and disengaged from the engine. You may just have resistance in the connections to the battery. Or maybe a weak battery? The starter switch that you engage with your foot can cause trouble that way too. If you turn the lights on and then hit the starter, do the lights go completely out? If they do, then I think you just don't have enough juice to the starter. You might want to make sure the driveline for the pto is disengaged. Otherwise all of that PTO drivetrain has to be turned by the starter.

Yep they sure will slip out and remain in gear. Even sometimes when you move them from the high side to the low side. Did you have trouble with it before you rebuilt the starter? Are you sure you did the starter right and have it in place without binding it up?
