I installed a newer crank in my 36 A and with it i put the newer rods and pistons.Since my bores were so so, i used STD. cast late A gas high altitude pistons. The problem is that the bottom ring comes 1/2 way out of the back of the block and the top ring comes out 1/2 way at the ridge at the top of the bore. i also have .045 m/w and another set of just plane late A gas cast pistons and the rings all line up the same so they will all do the same thing. Now i was told that there was two differant m/w pistons. One with a big notch and one with a smaller notch and that i needed the small notch pistons.Dose any body know this for sure,i have know problem boring the block if it fixes my little problem.

That "Late" crank "stroked" it a 1/4" didn't it...!! Should not create too much problem, if you have the top ridge reamed and honed well enough.. You can "Massage" the notch to get good flame travel..

Is everything good in the bore? If so I would clean the bore at the top and do allow for expansion as the piston will grow when it runs and I know there are some around here that do not run a lower (bottom ) ring. Less rings less friction, why do you thing the trend was to elimating all those rings?

As far as I know, all oil rings come "half out of the back of the block" at the bottom of the stroke. At least my A B and G do.

I assume you are pulling this tractor. you could just eliminate the top ring, and have a new groove machined for the oil ring above the old groove.

well i looked at what i had laying around and Stds cast and m/ws have the bottom ring in the same spot.the top ring on the m/ws is differant if the notch is large or small.thats when i lined the rist pins up.So if i had a set of 045 with the big notch id be ok.But i have 045 small and 125 big notches, block is in nice shape dont need to go 125.

if you look at the spark plug hole you will see it gos strait in to block 90 deegres to piston. 49 and later A s it is at an angle this angle moves the tip of plug closer the head so you need pistions for 46 or earler the late piston will not fire correct luck Kent
