will a late model 4020 diesel head function on
a 4230 engine? I know they are both 404 and will
probably bolt up.They do have differant part numbers.I am putting a 4230 engine into a 4020. Does anyone have knowledge of the changes to
convert? thanks for any help.

4230"s aren"t bad starters if they have the right head gasket, and the engine"s are in good condition.

i dont know about the heads, but the motor will work. i am doing one rite now. the trouble is up front--(hydraulic coupler, fan blades, radiator hoses, possibly alternator) we did one 10 yrs ago and used 4320 side rails to accomadate the extra length....i am not buying the rails this time. YES--THAT MOTOR WONT START FOR CRAP....i have heard people adjusting the advance on the pump or changing starters...we just use a touch of ether--lol. good luck

In response to your fan and hyd coupler problem
i was planning to use my old 4020 balancer on the
4230 engine. The crankshaft number is the same at
least on mine. Also i was hoping to use the 4020
waterpump and block the waterport on the block.
that would solve the clearance issues.the only
question i have is would it make a hot spot or would it circulate the coolant enough? thanks

I hope you are doing an overhaul on the 4230 engine so it will start as good as the 4020 engine. I have a 4230 and it is a poor starter and I guess they all were.

I've got two 4230's and they start fine for me.
Great size tractor for hay work.
