Jim, in addition to what the other gentlemen said, if you are using ethanol you will get a little more frost due to the latent heat effect of ethanol going through a pressure drop (your carburetor venturi). It is not harmful and as long as the tractor does not miss it won't hurt anything. If you have extreme situation the tractor will start to sputter as the frost thaws because it can ice on the inside as well as the outside in certain conditions. Hope this helps. Mike

What model and year tractor ? Some had manifolds you can switch a heat valve and others you could buy a "special" manifold that put some heat up there to help with that problem.

Mike, it's a 1953 40U and as far as I know there is no switch to preheat the manifold. Would keeping a splash of dry gas in the tank be an advantage in cold weather? jim

I was thinking more of the waterloo models as they had fixes for this or a exchanger valve. From what the other posted said dry gas might make it worse ? Do you have a heat deflector on the manifold towards the back but ahead of the gas tank ? I seem to remember my M or 40 having them ? this may ? help. I never had any problems with my M but have with my late B and 4020 gas. You may have to make a deflector to divert some of the heat to that area ? make sure the carb. isn't too lean settings.

High dew point and lots of humidity is most likely the cause. Applying some redirected exhaust gas to the affected area or heating the air intake like they do on airplanes is one fix. A heat houser on the tractor is another.....
