Ok, may have to replace mains in our 730 D. Question does part F1921R contain both outside mains? Also I see only the .030 Center main is still available with deere, any other sources for this? Lastly, as for main housing seals, were do I find the flywheel side part number, shows with housing? Thanks in advance, Joe

Joe, when I had my 730D apart last winter, I looked forever to find a center main bearing that was standard sized. Never did find one. I had to grin the crank, and did all three surfaces so they were all the same. It was a shame, as the tractor only had 500 hours on it. Good luck with the project!

A compression test would be a good place to start. Dirt and crud inhallation generally expedites the wearing of rings. If it runs good, you may get lucky...but don't count on it. A lot depends on how long it was ran like that and what kind of conditions it was ran it. If it was run in dusty conditions with large gaping holes for 20 years, it's probably gonna need some major attention. You might get lucky and just need rings though...can't see what's behind a closed door! After I got inside of my 8N, I found that all of the top rings were broke (probably from Ether), one sleeve what in a gazillion pieces in the oil pan and another was right behind it. Take your time going thru it and don't be cheap. You can do it right or do it twice (or more). Just my .02 worth. Good luck!

Joe, in the parts book it appears that the F1921R is per bearing. The left side of the 730D (and many other 2 cylinders) uses an oil slinger with a packing to seal between the crank and slinger, part # A4224R
Hope that helps.

CAN OF WORMS OPENED!! HELP in reply to LarrySTN, 01-19-2008 15:06:33
I am afraid I may have found our can of worms. After buying a taporlock today and then deciding that besides the cracked and warped old flywheel being replaced we better take a peak inside. Well apon disassembly found that the rubber air intake hose has two large rotted holes in it. Removed the intake pipe and quite a bit of caked on dirt and crud. The engine was running well, and has great power. We had planned on going deep enough to inspect the lower end, mains and rods. How do I insure the dirt ingestion didn't do VAST damage. I know, I think it did do a great deal of damage. Can I take a cold compression check of cylinders to see. Please let me know what you guys would do if you were me. Thanks Joe Hartman

Every 2cyl. diesel I have ever been around is a "can of worms" you need to be committed to do it right costs be damned or best not even start and sell it off and go buy a 4020 or something like that which is made componantized where one assembly is not so intertwined into the others. Doing one half a$$ed is not going to work out. That's what happened years ago and now WE are faced fixing completely worn out tractors with very expensive and ever becoming non-existant parts.

We do intend on doing all that is needed. I just hadn't planned on it!! Went from just taking a peak at the rods and mains just to be sure. Now having to go all the way down just to insure not having a major failure in the future. Was going to tear into it today more, but alas garage door blew open in the sub-zero temps and froze all the water lines. Change of plan #3 for the weekend. Joe

If I was to of planned all my restorations before hand likely I'd of never done any of them. LOL ! Get all the books JD parts and service and I&T if you don't allready have them. Take your time and don't get in a hurry with a timetable like an upcoming show or fair there will always be next year. Since these are so intertwined when you have the engine all apart do the transmission too as you are right there with all the covers off. Yes it is more money and time, but you won't regret it later on. One of these diesels done right will run completely different ( BETTER ) than the average one you thought ran good. They will also tend to make more noise, but less at the crank area and more in the combustion area. You can even hear it out the stack, just a stronger sound because it is stronger.
