A friend of the family was replacing the bushings in the lower draft link on the 3pt and in the process decided to change the oil in the rear end. In the oil he found what appears to be a few needles from a needle bearing and was wondering where these would come from? The tractor is a 4630 1976 or 77, has the quad range, and the tranny has somewhere around 14,000 hours on it.

Thanks to all for your help, the guy doesn't want to fix it anyway so I guess he'll find out the hard way. If it goes I'll let ya know.

The permaclutch was replaced last year. The last problem they had with the tractor was it lost oil pressure, so they tore the bottom end off it and found that somehow the thrust washer on the main bearing had been ground completely off and the crankshaft was smashing into the block. So they put a new long block in it and the reason he said this happened is because the PTO clutch was warped. Never heard of this before but what do I know.

The needles he said are about an inch long, 1/16th give or take a hair on diameter.

The last 4630 I overhauled, I also found the thrust bearing about toast but was able to have the crank welded up and the block was still useable. This engine and the other 4630 had the piston rings working onto the top of the pistons. Unknown hours, I believe a bunch. I'm guessing that the free travel wasn't adjusted on the clutch causing this. I also have seen an Oliver 310 waukasha and a 400 chevy with the thrust worn out. The oliver's owner likes to ride the clutch(prosthetic leg below knee) and the 400 bad torque converter. chris

Ask him for the measurements of the needles, to narrow it down a little to point him in the right direction. chris

I'm not exactly familiar with the rear ends on those things, and don't exactly know what the sun gears do so if anyone could enlighten me on what they do, where they are, and how you get to them that would be a great help.
I told him to have the dealer look at it but he thinks he's going to wait until after they get done planting, because it's like we are going to start that tomorrow in Michigan or something, and it's only 600 acres. So it'll probably get parked out back with the 986 IH they tore the differential out of, and the 7520 Deere that only turns one way when warm.

Probably from one of the sun gears. Better get if fixed real soon before it really tears something up.
