Passed 3 new 9530T Deeres being hauled on the Interstate nice looking tractors, all 3 tractors had there exhaust cap up from the wind, We have always taped our rain caps down on our turboed tractors when hauling, To save the Turbo, Do new tractors not need to do this?

i always turn the flaps around the other way any way. that way they don't get caught on limbs sticking out around the edge of a field.

Re red plastic plug in reply to msb, 01-24-2008 06:37:57
Back in th 80's when I hauled new JD tractors from Waterloo,Ia. after loading on semi-iruck a red plastic plug was inserted in muffler to prevent turbo-charger from spinning. I bet JD still requires plug installation before leaving there premises. JD even inspects the tie-downs before one can leave. Jim

i do this on my antiques also so it dont suck the gas out of the carb and or tank i was told on the turbos that just the wind goin across the pipe would be enough to spin it

I have a friend that works as a field service mechanic for Cat. The dealership hired a trucking company to move equipment. During a pickup of a large new dozer at the dealership, several of the mechanics and other people in the shop ask the driver if he was going to cover the exhaust stack. The driver, who was not the normal driver for the trucking company at the dealership, said he did not have a cover and left the yard to deliver the new machine. In less than a week the dealership got a call from the new owner, stating the turbo was not working and was making a noise. The dealership made the trucking company pay for the repair. The machine was under warranty. However, the dealership said the driver was ask to cover the stack and did not. The normal driver carries two or three large vinyl socks with tie down straps to cover the exhaust pipes.

But don't you need airflow to make the turbo spin? I can see how the cap would flip up from the wind, but really can't see a path for air to flow through the turbo? Wouldn't you have to have BOTH an intake and exhaust valve in the same cylinder open in order for this to happen? Or a pretty good leak in the exhaust plumbing somewhere between the turbo and the engine?

its called valve overlap.at end of exaust stroke both valves may by design be open ,if engine stopped at this point on any of the cylinders ,then it could happen.

More likely the new owners will also get a surprize when the turbo goes out early ?
