I have a 1955 50 J.D. tractor and would like to buy a rotary mower. The tractor is in good shape and will be mowing approx. 10 acres of pasture.
The grass will be roughly 1'-2' tall.
I need advice on the width of mower the tractor will handle and also do I need to worry about p.t.o. speed?
Thanks in advance.

a 5' mower would be the right size. Space your wheels where you will mow the tracts out. Also install two other things. A slip disc clutch on the mower unit and an override on the PTO shaft. The override will keep mower from pushing the tractor and the slip clutch on the mower will protect the internal parts of the tractor. The engaging clutch and gears. Many people think that their engaging clutch is designed to be used as the slip clutch when bushing only to find an expensive journey inside the tractor to replace. Those slip clutch are about $80 and the overrides are about $60. both now come in quick coupler models..... good luck

I use a 5 ft. bush hog on my 1953 JD 50 with an overrunning coupler on the PTO. the ORC on the PTO takes the strain off the drive lines when the live pto clutch is disengaged and the pto is brought to a quick stop by the pto brake.
