I am restoring a 4020 hfwd (258739) in Scotland UK. I have got lots of questions to ask but for the moment just a couple. What would be on the top 10 list of things to look out for or to do when it"s in bits anyway? I have already done the engine with a jd engine kit and I got the crank checked and just needed standard shells. Not bad for 10000 hrs! New injector pump and injectors fitted but still seems a bit smokey (any suggestions). The tractor must have had light brackets on the front plate and i cant find part nos for the brackets. Would these be particular to european tractors?

Jim,

Good luck with your project! If it was me... I would be sure to remove the final drives and replace the brake linings. Running in oil, they will last 1000's of hours but when they wear out it's metal on metal before you know it. Then the transmission and hydraulic systems are contaminated with metal shavings.

Also, I would install an after market set of magnets in the sump screen. This should capture any metal in the system before it's pumped through the transmission pump.

Ask me how I know! This past spring I removed the rockshaft and replaced the transmission pump.
