First let me say I am no mechanic. I am learning with 4 years of baling, but am still learning....

So, my recently acquired 1966 JD4020 synchro seems to take issue with going into first reverse.

If I shift to that gear and go(release clutch) it nearly always will not go into gear, just gives that awful sound of not quite being in gear.

If I shift into it, keep holding the gear shift back, and release the clutch I have a 50/50 shot of keeping it in gear.

Is there a relatively easy fix? I would assume not since it is transmission related.

Had a 3010 that had the same problems. Your shift linkage is either wore out or out of adjustment. Take the cowl off that surrounds the gauges and dash, check for slop in the shift linkage and down on where the shifting rods connect to the transmission. If it's sloppy you need to get it re bushed, if not then you need adjusting, we had the Deere dealer come out to set ours up, they only charged one hour labor, dead of winter, so I figured I couldn't screw it up for that.

we"ve got a later 4020 that does the same thing, only with reverse 2. we just slam it into gear, and usually it goes. if you don"t pull it in hard enough, it will just grind. works for us, but we do need to fix it, and it is on the list.

If it hasn't been too ground up ? maybe rebushing the shifter and tightening up the linkage will help you get it into gear on the first try. Maybe then it will stay ? but it could be too ground up ?
