I posted a question about a John Deere 16 Foot Disc in the Implement Alley Forum. If any of you might have any knowledge on this disc I would greatly appreciate your assistance. There are a couple of photos posted (not the best angles though).

Thanks,

Joe

Well guys the PLOT thickens! I drove up yesterday to pick up the disk. Guess what, at the 23 degree setting the disk is 13' 9" wide and the disc spacing is at 10.75" so at at the 10 degree setting the disc will be roughly 16' wide (Extended width) as the owner claimed (he also claimed that it was only 9' wide to haul it home, argh! ). Now how this jives with the information contained in the owners manual and the parts manual is beyond me. The situation as it turned out for me was that I had to leave the disc up there because we didn't have time to narrow it (no tools no lighting) to break it down enough for me for me to make it legal to haul it on a trailer 8' 6" Max unless I have a commercial drivers license and get a route approved and pay for a permit! What a pain in the rear. Now I have to figure out if I can just pivot the gangs out of the way towards the center the next time I go back up there or if I have to completely remove them!

John Deere contacted me again today and confirmed that I do indeed have a Series 4000 12ft 7" 28 Disc Model that weighs in at a whooping 4360 pounds!

Series 3000

Minimum Gang Angle 10 Degrees Maximum 23 Degrees

Width Disc Spacing No. of Discs Weight

12' 9" 32 3880

13.5" 9 36 4110

15 9 40 4381

16 9 44 4801

Series 4000

Minimum Gang Angle 10 Degrees Maximum 23 Degrees

12' 7" 10.75" 28 4360

16'1" 10.75 36 5015

17'9" 10.75 40 5340

Some other interesting tidbits. Greaseless greasable bearings are utilized. Gang bolt torque is 1100 ft/lbs. Cylinder stroke required is 8 inches. Tire size is 11.00L-15 8Ply 40-42 PSI.

I guess that about covers most of that subject. If anyone ever needs more then that just get a hold of me.

Joe

PS. It does state that the HP requirements are in the 110hp +. JOHN DEERE 4320 to 5020!

Look in the parts book at the info for disc blades. You mentioned the number of blades on your machine. The spacing between the blades ( spool length) will be important. I see where the 3000 series had the 8 blades, etc..... the 4000 series listing does not give blade count for the arbor bolt, but gives the disc width. You say its 16'. I would guess from the numbers that you gave that the cutting width in front is 14'. 2 parts that will clue you in to exactly what disc you have ,, will be the spools. 3000 series use W37091 (11#'s), 4000 series use W37072 (18's). I did not find the part detail info for these spools, but by the weights I would guess one is 9" and the other 11",,,, or something like that.

I dont know on HP rating for your disc. If you could find a sales book from that era,, that might help. Another rough guess would be to get a Hp rating on a regular offset with similar working width, blade dia. and spacing. Actual hp will vary due to soil type and condition. HTH

Thanks for your replies! I feel that you are right (my only question is that parts book shows a minimum of 8 discs per gang [if I read the parts book correctly] and this one has but 7) but I havent been able to get confirmation from John Deere. I have been emailing the parts and ag departments all day Ag helpful so far they are trying to find out. Parts well they tell me that I can only order parts from them. No kidding, how do I order parts if they cant even tell me what parts I have to order! I have found this out for sure.

John Deere
Type H14DOA

Serial Number 001173H

Made In Canada

If anyone knows how to break that down I would appreciate the help and I am sure John Deere Corp would too as it isnt in there system!

I found a dealership in Moscow, Idaho that apparently has a larger version of my harrow called a John Deere H4DOD but I cant even find any information on the internet on that model number so any help would be useful.

Thanks,

Joe
