I have a 1 1/2 John Deere and they are easy to time but trying to convey the procedure in a few short words is difficult. There are reprints of the operator manuals for these engines which spell out in detail how to time them. The mag has to be timed by depressing a button on the end of the mag while the flywheel timing mark is aligned with the valve/ignitor push rod. The ignitor also has to trip as the flywheel timing mark passes the push rod. The problem is....there are two buttons on the mag and I can't remember which needs to "drop in" during the timing process.

Nice little engines, not a real good one as they are noted for crankcase pressure build up. This pushes oil out where it shouldn't due to blow by.

There are many models of the E, and good property probably due to the color. They as a general rule are easy starting and nice to show off. They are not real rare, but just nice to own.

www.enginads.com or something close to that will get you to the right folks also. I haven't been there for a while so I'm not sure.

They are real simple to work on as well, he will totaly enjoy it.

I can't help you with your ? but I have one and to this day I run a flat belt driven cement mixer with it. I only start it about once every 2 years and it never fails to start and runs perfectly all the time.
