Approximately six or seven years ago I bought a Woods L59 belly mower which was made to fit a JD 750 or 850 and perhaps a 950. The individual I bought it from had inherited it and a JD 750 from his father. Apparently his father died before ever installing it on the tractor and his son sold the tractor without the mower. I purchased it with the intention of installing it on a Farmall Super A. The mower had the same mysterious effect on me (didn't get it installed on the tractor), but recently I have revived the project. Unfortunately the necessary new parts from a Woods dealer apparently are $1200 which is unreasonable (to me anyway) although a new L59 mower would cost about $3000. Several avenues now exist, 1) sell the mower, 2) rework the 750-850 arrangement to fit the Farmall, 3) buy an old clapped out Farmall A with a used mower, salvage the necessary parts and sell the remainder, or 4) which is my current action plan: buy a JD 750 or 850 which doesn't come with a mower, although I realize this will be more difficult to locate. The question is since most of these vintage of tractors seem to have 2000-3000 hours, I would be interested in any known problems with these tractors before committing; ie, what should I be looking at, or diligently avoiding. Furthermore if reasonably maintained, could one expect a tractor with these hours to be somewhat trouble free or is a major breakdown literally "just around the corner"? Comments/opinions would be appreciated even if they are only to tell me I should have posted on the lawn/garden tractor board.

I bought a used 850 about 8 years ago with 600 hours on it. It has been a great tractor, only maintenance has been new battery, water pump, alternator - nothing unusualy for a 1981 tractor. I use it primarily with a 5' brush hog mowing pasture, in heavy growth and full throttle it only uses a little over a gallon per hour. The fuel economy is amazing. The early models have a single stage clutch, but after SN 16001 (at least for the 850's) I understand they have a two stage clutch.
I watch ebay to see if anything related to it comes up that I need, and it is not usual to see low hour models come up from time to time. A lot of people bought them for big lawn mowers so they don't get the hours put on them.
I like mine so much that if a late model 850 or 950 came up at the right price, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Appreciate all the replies. As suggested, I did a search and read all the posts. The general summary was that they were pretty good machines, which is consistant with what I have read here. Sure would like to get one with around 1000 than 3000 hours.

James: I've had a 5' woods belly on a cub international. I somewhat question the wheel base on the 750 for this type mower. My mower had angle iron railing and fastened to the rear axle housing with bolts. The mower then would pivot up and down by the side lift of the cub. Also there was a 90 degree belt pully housing that bolted on the pto housing. I don't think this mower was designed for the JD compact. Personally I think you would be better served with a 5' rear mounted finish maybe a landpride FDR1672 the lighter motel for your tractor. All my opinion is based on what I preceive your project to be. If I wanted to the use the woods belly I'd get a cub/a/140 international. Good luck.

This particular Woods L59 had the parts to install it on a JD750-850. I suspect one of the major differences is the 90 degree PTO pulley and mounting. The JD 750-850 would be center mounted and the Farmall SA PTO is offset. As you have said, I've heard that angle iron is used to mount the rear of the mower to the final drives on the Farmall SA. Perhaps I can buy a couple of the more complex pieces, including the proper belt, rework the pulley mount and construct the final drive angle iron mount for a more reasonable cost. I can get online printouts of both the Farmall SA and JD 750-850 L59 mower manuals from Woods, which is being done for me from a laser printer rather than my inkjet. Before jumping in I'll compare the two parts list and assembly prints. However the better half desires to run the unit doing the trimming while I'm mowing with MW 15 footer, and I'm sure she would be more satisfied with the JD which may be the deciding factor.

James
Just type in 750 and 850 in the search box. I got 793 and 751 hits. By reading them you should get a good idea of what you can expect if you buy one.
