I"m Removing the final drives on a 2240 2 wheel drive for a friend, to check / replace brake linings. I"m assuming since they are wet brakes I need to drain the hydraulic oil first. Is this correct? Also any other basic info appreciated. I do have the John Deere service book, parts book and operators manual for this tractor. Unfortantely I can find no reference to draining the hydraulic oil when removing the final drives.

Thanks in advance

Jim

Wow,

Here are a couple of pics from what I just found. The brakes and rings are shot. Something tells me there should be lining on both sides of the brake disk. There is only very little left on the insides, the wear grooves are barely visable. There is no lining on the outsides. It appears the left ring has worn so much that it has worn down to where the dowel holes have come right through.

Drain the hyd. oil first and check the sump screen and filter for iron filings and lining if you don't find any I'm not sure why you would need to work on the brakes ? These brakes can last a long long time if you run the proper oil keep moisture out of it. I put a set in a 2020 once that was ground down to metal on metal they did pull heavy silage wagons on the road so that helped do them in.

Thanks Mike,

There is poor braking on this machine. The owner has had it for about twenty five years and has never done the brakes. The hydraulic brake valves seem to be operating correctly, as they don"t leak down individually or sepepate. The right valve seems very hard and doesn"t go in much, while the left valve has a little more give to it. If I press the left and hold, then press the right it is hard, but then letting up on the left seems to equalize the right by allowing it to go in some.

Thanks agian

I can't remember for sure if you will get a flood of oil from the final drive removal or not ? Better be safe and drain it first as there maybe a oil return hole in the bottom of that casting. The last one I pulled apart had bad packings on the piston letting air get into the brake system and the pedal would sometimes go to the floorboard. Can't remember if i drained it first or not ?

I did just drain the hydraulic fluid, and removed the filter and long screen. No apparent problems there. About to pull the final drives to inspect the brakes. I"ll post back later to update. Thanks Again.

Jim
