I was looking through a book of pictures from the 1930s of JD Bs. I noticed part of the tractors had a (Model B) decal on the rear of the fuel tank and some have the JD logo with the jumping deer. Which is correct for a 36 B and where is the best place to get decals. Is there any info about correct decals and placement since mine were all gone when I got my tractor.

The Model B on the back of the tank would only be correct for the very early {4 bolt?}unstyled B. Your 36 B should have the Model B designation on the seat support.

Mark -- That decal change was a "time" thing -- making the change effective July 1935, or in other words -- at the start of 1936 production. And as others have advised, if you choose a quality source for your decals like Jorde Decals, the tractor's serial number will always be a fact in the deal so that one receives the correct ones. The model year for 1936 Model "B" Tractors would have changed beginning with serial number 12012, the first tractor built after November 1, 1935, according to the factory Serial Number Register. In most cases, prior to the 1939 model year, the model year changed when Deere's fiscal year changed---which ended on October 31, and began on November 1. The model year changes in the June/July period first took place with the introduction of the styled "A" and "B" Tractors in the summer of 1938.

Now – Let’s see here. November through October was indeed the Deere production year until we get to the 38 production year – that part is absolutely correct – my mistake. I had my mind only on the decal change.

As for the decals, the end of July 1935 (so I have been informed) is a significant point in decal appearance as relates to the leaping deer (trademark). The leaping deer was dropped from hood decals, the model designator (A & B tractors) on the rear side of the gasoline tank was replaced by the leaping deer, and the model designator now appeared on the seat channel. And reflecting back on the production year, it can then be observed that this change was made during 1935 production, and not at a point between production years. Note that I am not speaking of Model D decalorama here because I believe they were a bit different – I do not have that data "between my ears”, nor is it relevant to the question posted. (PatB)

Yes, I understand, that is easy to do, I've done it myself more times than I care to think about. No rebuke was intended, rather, after all these years, there is still confusion about when the model years changed, and making sure that the statement was not misinterpreted by a newcomer was my only intention.

And yes, insofar as can be determined, somewhere in the June/July 1935 period is when the decals you mention changed, and insofar as I know, your information was/is correct on that, and pointing it out was a good thing. No disrespect intended.

Jorde Decals is the best place to go. They have done all types of research and know which ones go on which models. Just give them your serial number (and model) and they will set you up with decals. I got mine from them and they looked great and went on great.
