So reading the earlier post that Deere is jacking with the prices of the lead washers, what is thier real purpose? No opinions please, just the facts...

The head set for my 720D came with copper washers. Just figured Deere stopped using lead. Installed copper washers 3 years ago, no leaks, I do use sealant on the block end of the head stud.

John, I have only replaced the head on a 620 once and I used a light coat of copper sealant on the metal gasket and it worked fine. There are people who are better machanics than me that will disagree as to which is the better sealant to use, but they will use some type. I think you are fine with any name brand sealant.
The lead washers are very soft. No lubricant is used or needed.

If you don't use them you will very quickly find out what they do, in addition to acting as a lubricant. By tomorrow morning you will have a bunch of coolant in your tractor's crankcase!

clw, do you put any type of lubricant on the washers before trying to tighten them down? always wondered if they were pure lead or if there was maybe some nickle in them to make them a little tougher. maybe they don't have to be tough, but rather soft to squeeze down in around the crack between the head and the bolts. while i'm asking, what do you put on the head gaskets before putting them back on? cousins son has one to do right away so any help is apprecaited.

They act as a lubercate while tighting the head down. Give you an good equal tourq on each nut.
Steel on steel will have resistance and the nut will not have the same tourq.
They dont seal anything.

Ben:

Have you ever removed a head and saw one or two studs with rust on the shanks? A stud can leak at the block side, and the coolant can travel up the shank inside the little bore and make it all the way to the head cavity. Or, if the cylinder head gasket weeps any fluid into the stud area those lead washers are the last seal there is before meeting up with the oil in the valve area.

I really think they were used more to seal than for lubricity. Everywhere else you torque a true nut surface down against a true head surface and call it a day. With a horizontal engine and the coolant laying there 24/7 against the head and studs, and the studs in through holes into the water jacket, for the price of a few lead washers they were sure it was sealed, and the torque application was smoother. So few people torqued those heads during field repairs that many just judged that when they had squished most of the lead out they were pretty much close to shop applied torque value. And, they probably were.

Frank: I have only done 5 JD overhaul of my own and I didnot see any rust on the studs and I do see your point of view and it has good merit. Thanks for the input.

Ben

Deer's prices for lead washers. Those for A & G $5.32 B $0.84 and I'm sure they are similar for others in the series. McMaster Carr, sheet lead, 1/16x6"x6" $10.46. I do believe I can make many more than two out of a sheet that size.

Are you enrolled with the "jdparts" website? If not, I urge you to do so today. WIthout any obligation whatsoever, this secure website gives you a virtual eye into your local dealer's stock room and his price lists. It makes a great shopping tool.

Go to Google & enter the seven letters of jdparts, and the first entry to come up should be something to the effect of "jdparts homepage". That is the one you want. Enter your address data, and the setup sequence will select the JD Dealer nearest to you. Then -- any time you need something from your dealer, scout it out on the site first and price it. Then when you actually buy, if the price is violently different -- you have basis to question it. Remember -- the fellows working that counter may never have touched a tractor like yours much less be at all familiar with its parts, and errors can be made. (PatB)

Last head set I bought had copper washers in it and they weren't very good to use ,not soft enough. Maybe we can start importing these head sets from China as they seem to have no laws banning lead and might even get the good asbestoes core gaskets back too. In the meantime maybe we can cut some washers out of the kids toys ?

Makes for a more even torque and helps seal any leaks.
