I have a 4955 that has almost 8900 hrs. on it. It doesn't quite have the power it did a year or two ago. You have to keep an eye on the coolant level, it wants to go down. Not going in the oil. Oil looks good and maintains proper level. I'm pretty sure the coolant is going out the exhaust. I am planning on taking the head off and having it checked, and replacing the head gasket. Is there anything else I should be checking and is there anything I should be aware of when doing this. Never done this type of job yet, want to get as much input as possible before I start. Thank you.

Oil analysis will determine if any antifreeze is getting into the crankcase. Best to track the problem down before tearing anything apart. The head installation has to be done perfectly on the 4955 or they will leak. The 4955 is a high HP 466cu". Has it be turned up any? The installation topic as discussed here a year or two ago. Wasn't there a piston revision on the 4955? The "new improved" 55 series pistons had problems and the fix was to install the 50 series pistons?

Don't forget to look for water leaks around the front of the engine, like the water pump weep hole and the tubes between the pump and thermostat housing. They're hard to see up there. With that many hours, it might be time to think about an overhaul. Like rexhellwig said, don't forget the aftercooler, if it leaks you'll get coolant in the intake manifold.

Before you take the head off..Check out that cooler between the turbo and the head. I had one with identical symptoms several years ago. The cooler had a tiny leak that eventually caked up enough to restrict the charge air.

New cooler fixed both complaints.

How's the blow-by ? Might be time for some new piston/liners too ? and also put in a new set of bearings.
