4020 diesel problems

Have a 4020 and thought it ran out of diesel the other day. Bled all the lines and even used a little Starting Fluid, it would kick over with that but would not stay running. Another farmer and I was trying to get it fixed when we came across a standard screw on the return side of the injector. We took the screw out, and the dam thing started and ran perfect but leaked diesel like a siv. We thought this was some sort of blead screw, but as we began to screw the screw back in the motor began to loose power, throttle, then die. Need to get this tractor back on the clock, any help would be appreciated.

Best to have the injection pump rebuilt before it does even more damage to th innards of the pump anmd that can get real expensive if you let it go too long. Ask your rebuilder to eliminate the plastic ring when rebuilding it and the pump should be good to go as long as you will use it.

You have a plugged fuel return on the pump. The return elbow has a check valve in it and the valve will get plugged due to the flex ring in the pump disinegrating. The flex ring is a buffer that drives the governor inside the pump. You can remove the elbow and lightly blow through it with compressed air. Too much air and the check valve will be destroyed. Ultimately the flex ring will need to be replaced.

there is a rubber disc inside the pump that is notorius for coming apart.when they do little pieces of rubber block the return port and the engine will die.the return line fitting in the back of the pump should have a check vale fitting in it,take out the fitting and see if the engine runs if it does the pump will have to be repaired

Well how about a couple more details. Which Roosa Pump do you have? You have something blocking the return line.

32054 is the only number that I can find on the pump. The tractor has been repainted, but let me do some investigating and I will get back with you.

You are probably misreading the number. There are eight different pumps used on 4020s, but your's is probably an AR32564 - which is Roosamaster/Stanadyne model DBGVC633 - 1 AJ, 3AJ, or 5AJ. Most likely the plastic weight retainer ring is broken and plugging things up. Time to check the pump over and also check all the injectors. The part you removed adjusts the opening pressure of the injector nozzle.

If you know somebody that knows pumps, it only takes an hour or two to take the pump all apart and fix as needed - along with $30 to $100 in parts. If you do not know anybody - then you're screwed and will pay $350 and up (sometimes way up) to a pump shop just for the pump work. With the injectors - assuming you've got the pencil injectors - there's no rebuilding them - just replacement. Anything less and you're throwing money away.
