Well, I got the new tires and put them on, Today I adjusted the valves, and crawled around the tractor to look for leaks, funny noises, etc. First question is While I had it running there is noise in the gearcase/crankcase, I am 34 so this tractor was old when i was born so I really dont know what its supposed to sound like, this is the only one ive heard run. The sound is not really a knock, just a clunking sound, I am a diesel mechanic and own my own shop so im not stupid, i just havent heard anything to compare, I know this is a general question, just wanted to know if these normally made some noise, it is my no means banging or anything just noise im not used to hearing. also does anyone know what that bracket is on the rear step? and the pulley that drives the fan belt has some backlash in it, it will move 1/2 inch each way and will move in and out about the same, the in and out movement acts as though it spring loaded, push it in towards engine and it will spring back out to the stop. I hope all this makes sense, my manuals for this tractor on the way and I thank you all for your help.

I really dont plan to open it up, the machine runs very good and I just havent found any reason to open it up. Just plan on fixing leaks and cleaning it all up and painting it. I would like to hook it up to something and work it before I do all this work just to make sure I dont have something going on that i cant see now. I have taken it out and driven it through all the gears and everything seems good, but that has been without any load on it, I found a few Rs on you tube and listened to them run and mine does not sound any different than those, just wish there was one close to me that I could check out before I put all the time and money into paint.

Howdy,

That noise in the tranny is most likely either your 3/4th gear or 1st gear. I've got two R's and both have had the 3/4th gear with teeth missing. Split one back in 2003 and will have to split my latest purchase whenever I get it home and in the shop. Are you planning on doing a total restoration? If so, I'd just wait till you tear it all apart to fix it. God bless.

Those R's kinda have a bad rap for eating up fan drive gears which I think also drive the pto.

I dont plan on turning it up or anything, we just have local pulls here where most all the neighbors from surrounding area rent a sled and just have a good time, only have to travel 70 miles to the farthest one, we have only 3 a year. So there is only 2 mains then? Are they weak in the stock form or just if you crank them up?

From what is posted, they are fine as long as you don't turn them up much. Just don't try to get 80 HP out of them. Yes, they have 2 mains. The 80, 820, 830, 70, 720 and 730 diesels all have 3 mains.

Yes it was used to transport the cylinder when it was not on an implement. The missing bracket would have extended past the upright piece and had a cutout for the pin on the heavy end of the cylinder with the ram end pointing down. Hopes this helps. Armand

Thank you for your reply, A cylinder hangar? Would that be for just transporting? There are 2 broken off bolts on the top, indicating possibly some kind of cap, I guess i will just put it away and wait to see if I can find the rest of it. thank you for your input. The tractor sure runs great, and I guess I did forget that the R was the first diesel so It all makes sense, I look forward to pulling this tractor in june, just need to get it done.

Pulling? Don't go turning up the pump much. The R was the only Deere diesel without a center main bearing. You are better off with something other than the R if you want to turn it up.

Oh, and don't use the PTO on anything hard, they are known for breaking the gears in the PTO. Then you have to pull the whole trans.

The bracket on the back step I think is missing a piece that bolts on top of it that holds the hyd. cylinder. If you have any Deers that you canlook at (model60/70 or older) as I can't explain it any better. Maybe somebody can post a picture of it From maybe a model A or G. Armand

Hi There ! I think you are just hearing John Deere's first attempt at producing a Diesel tractor...It is a two cylender beast and it just sits there and rocks back and fourth while running, It has a massive engine and related components. I know my "R" has that Diesel sound and also the fan shaft is spring loaded and it is normal to have a bit of back lash as the shaft is long and it gets magnified with the small amount of gear wear in the governor. As for the bracket at the rear, I had one and it was a remote Hydrolic cylender hangar...But, Yours seems a bit different than mine?? Hope I have shed a bit of light on your questions...Champ.
