Hi,thinking of changing my 68 deisel 4020's battery box locations.Been 12v start 2 12's paralell connected for 25 years.Got a Iskra stater,4 years ago.Needs new batteries and cables, think now would be agood time to do it.Would like to use a couple of them group 31 batteries like my semi uses.Better price and more cca. Before I break out my welder and reinvent the wheel are there any aftermarket boxes that would hold these in a better location? Thanks Mark

I put my pair of 950 cca size 31 OTR truck batteries where r. john put his in his picture, but about 4" aft....my step was not in the way as his would be. I built a steel box and bolted it to the frame. While at the truck dealership where I bought the batteries, I had them make me a set of 00 cables with lugs to fit the 3/8 studs on the 31 batteries. The longest cable was 15".

I cannot tell you what this did for my tractor, but I could (have since upgraded to a 4230) start that sucker in the worst of weather in less than a minute with no starting aid. On the 4230 I have upgraded the batteries to 950 31's also, but rather than the OEM 6 volts in series, I wired these suckers in parallel still using 00 cable and OEM battery boxes (cables from rt side are long but ok considering OEM wiring) and have the same starting ease with no aids.

Mark

I made a battery shelf for my gas 4020 in the form of a step. The side terminal battery keeps the connections cleaner and shorter.

This is what I did on my 4010. It has been converted to 12V. Not pretty, but this is a working tractor. New 00 cables and she REALLY turns over fast.

When I make new battery boxes for the square batteries, I keep them in the same location as the originals. I make up a frame out of 1.5x1.5x0.1875 angle iron and put expanded steel in the bottom. Then I cut the brackets off the old battery boxes, and weld them onto the square frame that you welded up. Then to keep it from tipping I put a piece of strap or two, 1x0.125, from the outside of the newly made battery box tray up to the underside of the floor pan, put one bolt through from the top. I know it isn't correct but doesn't look too bad in the end since they are still tucked up under the floor pan. In my opinion it looks better than the huge boxes people hang off the side of the frame.
Good Luck
