I am working on the transmission and clutch off an early 720 pony motor. I need to get the transmission and clutch shafts out of the housing. The manual says just pull on them together and they will come out. I can't get the transmission shaft and overrunning clutch gear to come out. The clutch shaft comes out smoothly. I have to get the transmission shaft out so I can get to the clutch shaft bearing and oil seal.

I guess it is the bell housing that this shaft and O/R clutch gear is stuck in. From looking at yours, I should be able to pry it out of there, maybe the bearing will come with it, maybe it won't.

Just hold it by the O/R shaft and tap down on the housing with the a brass or dead-blow hammer. The bearing should come out. It'a thumb-press-fit, not a full press fit.

If you have the transmission housing split off of the pony motor, it should just slide out. Is it hanging on the pinion splines? Maybe a worn area with some high spots? Tough to describe when you don't have an example opened up in front of you.

Those over running clutches never get the maintenance they deserve either. On mine I had to re-machine the star driver so that the rollers had a fresh, flat land to settle in. Mine had deep troughs worn that would keep the rollers trapped in the gully instead of rolling to engage and then easily releasing. New springs and plungers used to be pretty cheap and were worth replacing while it was open. If you have any wear on the star drive, we might need to talk a bit more.

That picture shows a different setup than I'm dealing with. The O/R shaft bearing sits in the casting of the transmission and the shaft is pointing straight up at you, it then goes through an oil seal and through the clutch fork and bearing, and then seats in the clutch drive disk at the flywheel. I'll try to post a picture, or we may not get too far.

I thought you were talking about the pony transmission side of the unit. Here's the "bell housing" side, which must be the side you are having trouble with.

The bell housing should slide right out of the clutch plate, then you split the tranny to get to the O/R clutch. Do you have the fork linkage out of there? I don't think it will clear with the links in place.

Here's a photo that doesn't show much of the last one I did. O/R clutch shaft just sits in there until you trap it when you bolt the housings together.

I have had good luck using ATF as the gear oil. It flows well and doesn't inhibit the rollers from moving well. You do have to make sure your gasket and sealant is in good shape. Clooney and I discussed going that way a long time ago.
