Thanks for the help! Does the cup face down or up? Does neats foot oil and plain old 30 wt work about the same?

Below is an excerpt from the Supplement to the JD-H Restoration Guide that should answer some Q's, plus the "cup" of the leather boot should be up to better shed rainfall. (PatB)
----- ----- ----- ----- ----- Page 83, The Order of Things Going onto the Shifter Lever -- The order of items installed on the H722R Lever demands review. Contrary the illustrated parts breakdown in PC304, page 23 and as outlined in the basic text, the much stiffer H723R leather boots now coming from Deere warrant placing the D377R Spring UNDER the H723R Leather Seal (boot), not on top.

Treatment of the H723R leather seal (boot) is best done with Neats-foot Oil. However, readers are having trouble finding this product. Also, many commercial so-called Neats-foot products contain substantial amounts of petroleum additives. Thus a two or three-day soak of the H723R in ordinary engine oil will generally prove satisfactory. ++++

BTW, I've had luck finding Neatsfoot oil at just about any sporting goods store that sells quality baseball gloves. It's THE oil to use when breaking in a new glove. Also found it over the years at our local shoe repair shop as he sold it to condition and waterproof boots. My horse-owner daughter just stopped by my office and otld me the have it at her tack store, too.

Another old-time leather conditioner and waterproofer is Mink Oil.

Last one I bought was 11.00.Leather thats used to make aprons works fine. Its best to keep the gears shift covered on an H thats left outdoors.

Bigjo -- There is a nice outline on repairing the gearshift assembly for the "H" tractor over at the JD-H Restoration Site (below). Once there, scan across to ARTICLES 2, and from the drop-downs, select GEAR SHIFT fully printable. (PatB - The Texas Shorthorn)
