Howdy- I figure I'd better introduce myself a bit. I live in Grand Rapids, and I have restored several motorcycles, a few of which I have documented here:

Link
Anyway I am soon to start on my dad's (formerly grandpa's) JD H. It's in running condition (ran last about 15 years ago) and in decent shape. It had a poor attempt at restoration done about 25 years ago, which really helped preserve it. It has sat indoors since then. Once it warms up a bit here in Michigan, it will earn a spot in my garage and my truck will sit outside while I work on it. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as I delve into this. I have purchased two books to help me out- "How to Restore Classic John Deere Tractors" by Gaines, and "How to Restore Your John Deere Two-Cylinder Tractor" by Yost. Like I said- I have some restoration experience, but certainly not on a tractor. As the third-generation involved with this tractor, I'm excited to start. I plan to document on my site as I go, so pics will follow eventually.
Thanks!

The most valuable books will be a JD parts book and an I & T manual and JD operators manual.
May as well sell those 2 other books on ebay and then buy a copy of Pat's book for the H. His site has alot of info free for the looking too.

I have the JD parts book as well- I forgot to note that one.
I have seen Pat's site- it's bookmarked for sure. Lots of good stuff there! Thanks for the welcome and the pointers.

I was wrong. I have the I&H book, so that's good. I'll have to get the operator's manual.

You will find an original operator's manual at the JD-H Restoration Site for half what you will pay anywhere else. Also there you will find a Service Manual for the model "H" tractor, 2nd to none! Go there, pick up on the telephone number and call. (PatB)

Clay, I have a small library of books including "How to restore your two-cylinder tractor" by Spencer Yost. It is a very informative book with a lot of pictures. It has helped me out quite a bit, not as much as an I@T manual, but then again you can never have to much information!! Welcome aboard and have fun in your venture!! Jason.

I used my tractors back when I milked cows so I just don't get excited about a bunch of fancy paint on my tractors. In fact the H is setting in the cow pasture up on 20 mile after moving it from my old farm in Montague.

Yup- dad has a Farmall "M" that is still used as well. The plan is to clean up the H the rest of the way and use her on the farm for grandkid rides and such. It was my grandpa's first tractor, and the first one my dad ever drove, (grandpa is 15 years gone and dad is 65), so its done it's share of work. It will be fun to get looking nice again.

Clay You are in for a lot of fun. Those little H's are really great to work on. I have a 41 H and 43 HN both fully restored. Just drove my 52 A today to check things out before going to the paint shop, 52 B is in tear down at this time. You will find lots of goood information on this site. Enjoy it and take lots of pictures.

Clay -- Take a short stroll to the John Deere "H" Restoration Site (below) for some eye-opening items to help you with your "H".

Pay particular attention to a short little piece -- under ARTICLES 2 called GETTING STARTED.

This site is totally devoted not merely to "H" owners, but especially to those attempting tractor resoration for the very first time. Enjoy! (PatB)
