I have two fourcylinder Wico AP magnetos that I would like to make to fit my BR:s. Could I file down two cams to make them fire as AP 477B:s does? I have figured the change of rotation and lag, I think, from a posting last week. Thank you for any input.

Johan, Duane will be covering the AP's this week in his Mag Seminar at GOG, I only cover the direct drive non reduction gear Wico C and X Models in my Seminars. That being said, I doubt if you can all that easily (if at all) reverse that direction and make it work with the existing rotor and impulse assembly (those engage dogs just work in the right direction), cuz remember the rotor position is tied with the high cam lobe positions which is also relative to whatever lag angle and drive cup is used anddddd d the dogs engage or not relative to the direction (and RPM's centrifugal force) they are turning. Also if the extra cam lobes still fire the coil at unneeded times (like say they were NOT removed) that spark gap energy n voltage needs to be dissipated somewhere somehow even if by a shunted section of plug wire cuz its NOT good to dry fire a mag causing the voltage to rise higher then normal and maybe have a spark arcing at an undesirable location and/or damaging the coil.

BOTTOM LINE I just DONT KNOW ENOUGH (at least concerning the mechanical portion) about the AP Mags to answer your question Sorryyyyy y but wouldnt bet too much on it working ifffff f a reversal of direction is needed (all that spring n wind n trip impulse is for a certain didretion ya know), in which case Id bet even less lol

Ifffff direction were NOT an issue (which it obviously is) it wouldnt be all that hard to figure out the two needed firing timings, the first of which is when the governors female drive slot is fore n aft flat horizontal and thats just when the points will just break open and then 180 later the points again break open n she must fire again with a rotor tip pointed to a terminal leading to the other left cylinder. Then do away with or shunt out the other unwanted firigns n youre off to the races

No bets here lol

Best wishes till Duane arrives

You DON'T have to file the cam. Simply inconspicuously short the 2 unused high-tesnion terminals to ground. You could even do it INSIDE the cap.

Getting the points of the reversed mag to "break" at the correct postion of the armature MAY be another matter.
