In my JD 2010. I finished the rewire about 3 weeks ago now, I put it back to JD specs with positive ground. Everything has seemed to work great until I went to crank her yesterday. She had not been ran since Saturday, and the battery was almost completely dead. Once I put a little juice on the battery and got her running, I noticed that my GEN Idiot Light was twinkling (don't know the word for just a slight amount of red light coming through) at idle, as soon as I would move the throttle it would go away.

Here are the things I have checked.
1. I checked the voltage at the battery at idle and at full throttle, they are 12.1V and 12.6V respectively. A long way from the 13.6-14V I was expecting.

2. After doing step 1 I assumed the generator was bad, so I pulled a battery cable off while the tractor was running, and it kept running, so I assumed the generator is atleast partially working.

3. I printed off the notes I found on here that John T. always posts on generator issues. 1. I am getting 12.1-12.6V. 2. The BAT term on the VR is hot. 3. The VR is wired correctly. 4. The VR and Gen are grounded good, according to this test. 5. It doesn't charge with the Field grounded.
6. Jumping a wire from Bat to Gen does nothing.
7. I am pretty sure the wiring is correct, the battery checks good, so I am pretty confident I have generator issues.
8. It passes the motor test on both parts.
9. I took the generator apart, cleaned everything and reassembled it. I then tested it with no wiring on it and it was putting out 12V
at idle and 18V at full throttle. I hooked everything back up, and
it is putting out 12V at idle and 9V at full throttle. Thats right, I said the voltage went down as the RPM went up.

I am at a loss on what to check next. I plan on taking the generator to a shop as soon as I get a chance, but if anyone has any ideas about something I could try, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

I checked the belt, it is tight and not slipping.

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion on checking the belt. I will look at it today and let yall know.

Also, I am not interested in changing to an alternator. Trying to stay original.

Thanks

You didn't mention the belt, has it been replaced or is it old. Your description sounds like a slipping belt under load, before you spend money on the generator see if you can tighten or replace the belt, I replaced the generator on my 2010 with a one wire alternator years ago which saved alot of headaches on the charging problem but belts still can cause a lot of charging problems on any unit.
