I have a 730 electric start JD 24 volt, and the voltage regulator rubbers rotted out and it fell down burning all the wires up. So i just got done rewiring it, and replacing the voltage regultor with one from a 4020 jd. Now it wont charge. I tested the generator and they told me it was good. If we polarize the generator, then when I check with a multimeter I show 20 volts. I really dont know what to test next. IS it the switch, or is it the voltage regulator? Or is it that the 4020 one is different. any help would be great. Thanks

Dear Jeremy,
With the tractor off, I would polarize the generator by momentarily jumpering the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator. Then with the tractor running, jumper between the FIELD and A2 terminal on the generator. This test takes the regulator out of the circuit and independently checks the generator. While the generator is thus "full fielded" connect a voltmeter between the A1 and A2 terminals of the generator and as Bob says you should get 28 volts or greaterr. If you don't there is a problem with the generator such as brushes or bad fields etc. Let us know what you find.

It needs to charge at over 28 Volts.

This is determined by the generator and regulator, and ISN'T dependent on the switch.

I would THINK the 24-Volt 4020 regulator, if good, should work with the 730 generator, IF wired correctly.
