Dave, If you look into the top of the tranny, you will see four shifter shafts each of which has a gate to receive the ball end of the gear shift lever. Three of the gates have two notches for the ball to fit into, and one gate, which I believe is to the front of the tractor, has only one. The gates can be slid along the shifter shafts to different positions to select the gears. They have detents which will engage notches on the shifter shaft. To slide the gates along the shaft you may need a small prybar to help pop the detent out of the notch. The gate which has only one notch is the one that is engaged when you are sliding the lever from right to left while the transmission is in neutral. If the transmission is presently in gear, You may want to jack up one rear wheel so you can spin it to help with shifting to neutral. Be sure to disengage the clutch. When you have the three gates with two notches each lined up, the transmission should be in neutral. You can tell a lot by having someone turn one of the rear wheels a bit while you fiddle with the gates. After you have it in neutral, slide the gate with one notch so it lines up with one side or the other, Fit the ball end of the gearshift lever into this gate as you put the cover on, or fit it into whatever notch you can on the side the single gate is on. Test it out while you still have the wheel jacked up. Good luck to you. Be safe. Kurt
