I am new to this group so please bear with me if I appear somewhat ignorant on some matters. I have a problem concerning a 1952 Model B transmission. I had to replace some of the parts from the gearshift lever because of a failure of the small circlip that holds the lower portion of the lever parts together. The transmission was locked in a forward gear and I was not able to place it in "neutral" before removing the gear shift lever and top cover assembly. Can anyone please explain to me what I need to see while looking downwards and into the transmission itself in order for the sliders and gears to be placed (shifted) into "neutral" in order to replace the gear shift lever and top cover. I can not for the life of me get this back together correctly. I am more than willing to call anyone willing to give me their telephone number. I live in Alaska and information on this specific transmission can be hard to find up here. Thanks for any help that anyone can give. Dave Campbell

Kurt did a good job of explaining. I would however offer one other suggestion. I find it easiest to put the cover back on those late B's if I put the shifters in 4th gear. The shifters are arranged like this. The front, single gated shifter to the left or low range and the rear most shifter for 4th and 6th also to the left. Middle two to the right. Place the lever in 4th. This way everything just drops straight down vertically and I find it goes together much easier this way than any other.

Good luck.

Durn it, old as I am I still get right & left mixed up. I wonder if other lefties tend to do the same. Probly not 'cause they're smarter than me.

Sorry to say it but what I wrote above is almost all backwards. I humbly apologize.

Shifter arrangement for 4th gear is the tall forward most single gated shifter is the range shifter and for 4th it should be to the left for the low range. The rear most shifter which is the 4th/6th shifter should be to the right or "in gear". The next shifter ahead (for gears 2 & 5) to the left for the "neutral position" and the next forward (1st, 3rd & R and the only one that has three detents) in it's middle detent, again the "neutral position".

I block the shifter lever into 4th with a block of wood & then it acts as a guide to lower the whole assembly straight down onto the main case. Bolts all lining up like clockwork.

Glad to help out anyway I can. I owe this forum a lot in my ongoing tractor restoration efforts. It"s a great thing about how knowledge and experience can be built up and passed along with the help of a group.

Dave,

If you look into the top of the tranny, you will see four shifter shafts each of which has a gate to receive the ball end of the gear shift lever. Three of the gates have two notches for the ball to fit into, and one gate, which I believe is to the front of the tractor, has only one. The gates can be slid along the shifter shafts to different positions to select the gears. They have detents which will engage notches on the shifter shaft. To slide the gates along the shaft you may need a small prybar to help pop the detent out of the notch.

The gate which has only one notch is the one that is engaged when you are sliding the lever from right to left while the transmission is in neutral. If the transmission is presently in gear, You may want to jack up one rear wheel so you can spin it to help with shifting to neutral. Be sure to disengage the clutch.

When you have the three gates with two notches each lined up, the transmission should be in neutral. You can tell a lot by having someone turn one of the rear wheels a bit while you fiddle with the gates. After you have it in neutral, slide the gate with one notch so it lines up with one side or the other, Fit the ball end of the gearshift lever into this gate as you put the cover on, or fit it into whatever notch you can on the side the single gate is on. Test it out while you still have the wheel jacked up. Good luck to you. Be safe.

Kurt

I would like to thank both Kurt and D. Coleman. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me because it helps immesnsely. Hopefully tomorrow or the day after I will be able to get this accomplished. After 8 heart operations I go a little bit slower than I used to. Thanks again for the help.

just had my 51 "B" cover off, the shift forks slide on shafts inside the trans. housing which have "ears or gates" on top. these gates are what the ball on the end of your shift lever slide in to move the shift forks which select or move the different gears into position, or out of position. in nutural these ears or gates should form a in line pattern that the end of gear shift lever will be able to be moved fore and aft along the nutural path. i hope my explanation is understandable. anyway good luck, d. coleman
