The Lions Club that I belong to has been given a John Deer B with a cycle bar mower.

We do not know the year but would guess it to be about a 1949/50. Is there any way to tell the year from the serial number?

Where would I find the serial number? I would guess this subject has been covered many time but nothing comes up for me.

It has been 50 years since I have been around the JDs so have forgotten most what I knew about them.

Thanks for any help.
We will be selling this tractor after I find out more info. I am in southern Oregon and if any one would like they can give me a PM.

Charlie, The tractor is somewhere between serial number 248257 (late 49) and 258520 (early 50) model. I can't get it any closer than that. That would make it one of the last 5000 made in 1949, or one of the first 5000 built in 1950. If you find out the second number on the tag is for a fact a 5, then it will be one of the last 3000 built in 49, or one of the first 5000 built in 50. Either way it is a late 49 or early 50.
I will stay away from guessing on the price.

Thanks for the replays Guys. I should have paid more attention to the left hand side of the screen. I will check under the mag today and see what we have.

The last time that I saw this tractor it was a pretty good looking machine, that was 4 years ago. At that time it was sitting outside, I am hoping that the owners have moved it inside other wise it may have gotten water inside and now maybe a parts tractor. :( :( :(

I went and looked at the JD B today. It is not a bad looking tractor but it does have some issues. The clutch is frozen and the brakes are also. We will probably be selling the tractor, mower and back blade as a unit and would like some idea as to its worth.

I look at the serial but for the most part the serial is gone. You can see the B and either the first or second number which is a 5. My guess it that the 5 is the second number as there are only two serial numbers that have a 5 that is would be stamped close to the B. This is not a 1944.

Is there a way to tell the year by useing the crank case casting number?

The casting number is B2480R.

We also was given a cycle bar mower with the tractor. What is one of these worth?

Included with the tractor and mower was a three point back blade. The blade is pretty well constructed.

I don't want to take up a lot of room on the site so here is a link to my photobucket site. If this works click on the B john Deer album. Please tell us what you guys think all of this would be worth.

Charlie, you're almost looking at it now...

Look on the Left hand side of the screen under "Research & Info", click on "Serial Numbers". And always give John 3 E's...

Good luck and have fun.
