Rebuilt engine, ran fine for about 4 hours. Now anti-freeze is getting into the oil. Raised oil level about an inch on dip stick. Tore engine down, head gasket showed very little compression from head. It appears that the head bolts ran out of threads when torqued. I am wondering if I have the wrong head gasket. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Are you sure you didn't install the wrong sleeves or seals? Deere dealers often get it wrong. The first 1020s had one seal per sleeve and sleeves are blunt on the ends. Later 1020s used three seals - one on the sleeve and two in the block and sleeves are bullet-nosed.

If your 1020 is an early one that originally had only one seal one each sleeve - the proper update is to install special sleeves that take three seals - all on the sleeve - none in the block.

It is a 1966 1020, bought new by my uncle. The head has never been off. I did not change the sleeves or seals.

Thank you for your comments.

You stated that the engine was rebuilt. How do you rebuilt an engine without having the sleeves out?

I guess I misspoke on the engine rebuilt.Replaced rod bearings, changed piston rings. The sleeves looked good, with no scratches or pits. Apparently I did not go far enough huh?

Thanks.

Did you have the head resurfaced? Is the liner standout correct? Were the headbolt holes clean? The headbolts should not bottom out unless there was dirt or rust in the bottom of the holes. I would be more inclined to say that a liner didn't seal properly due to a cut oring or improperly cleaned o ring grooves. If you didn't have a miss, excessive smoke,or bubbles in the radiator, and the head is not warped,i would rule out the headgasket. If the tractor was run with antifreeze in the oil you need to pull the pan down and check the bearings, antifreeze is death on bearings.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate any help you can offer. No, I did not have the head resurfaced. I am not sure that I know what you mean by liner standout since I did not remove liners. Do you know what the clearance should be? The bolt holes were clean. I did not miss or smoke or bubbles in the radiator. Will take you advice and pull oil pan down and check bearings. I talked with a local John Deere dealer today. He said that since I was using a substitute head gasket, I should also use the substitue head bolts, which are shorter. Does this make sense? It is a l966 1020, bought new by my uncle and the head has never been off.

Thank you again.
