Your cousin should get the operators and service manuals from 1-800-522-7448 before he wrecks anything else while working on it.

I was there today and He said he had manuals (but can't find them)

I agree with you totally, he should have known not to pull start it. He has a 4630 and a 4240 also so you would think he would know better. I don't know for sure but my guess would be he pulled it with the 4630. Something had to give and it did, about 4 thousand dollars worth. All I can do is try to find him the parts and stand back and shake my head.

He is making a list of part #'s and we are going to try that route, fixing the one he has.
Do you know how much the clutches are?

Yes to the pull start. It is my Cousins tractor and he tried to pull start it. He has found one rebuilt and one from J D ( i assume it is rebuilt) for 4 grand. He wanted me to post and try to find something cheaper. He has his mind set on fixing this one and I will have to agree. Put 4 grand in this one and know what you have or spend 8 to 10 grand and may still have problems. Thanks for all the replies.

i had to replace the complete two speed in 4440 last fall the two speed complete rebuilt from mo. tractor was double DD in siekton mo was 1750.00 . if it just need the disk. then replace them might have to also do the metal along with the fiber coverd one they have been up dated to some sorta meteal fiber disk. also replace the sealing rings. and piston rings. a parts brake down well help. its not that big of deal to rebuild. one thing you can count on is if its man made it well in time wear out or break most likey it just time to be rebuilt.

Can't recomend all the time, money and work of obtaining a donor tractor, removing the clutch pack then installing that worn out clutch pack into another tractor.
What ruined the clutch pack in the 1st place? No use replacing parts if the casue isn't located. It takes less time and costs less $$$ to solve the problem rather than repair the symptoms.
If you look in the 2840 parts listings. That clutch pack is also common to the 3120,3030 & 3130.
New parts from Deere are not all that expensive.
Being that the 2840 is around 28 years old. Depending on the condition of the rest of the tractor. It maybe time to trade or scrap it and get something newer/better. If somebody had dumped sae 90 gear lube or an economy hydraulic oil that doesn't say "wet clutch compatable" on the container. The pto clutch and brakes are also damaged. Low apply pressure will smoke the linings. Put a gauge on there and find out what is going on.
