I have a 05 John Deere 4120,and was told that the pump timing could be adjusted to gain horse power. Looking for info on how to.

I have ajusted many pumps on Deere units but not the 4120. I have done a lot of work on these engines (for the factory and dealer) You cannot increase power by changing the timing. I believe there is a set screw in the timing gear cover that limits the fuel rack travel. Turn screw out for more rack travel thus adding more fuel. Be aware you might get in trouble with "fed"s" if you are caught doing this. I do not work for J. Deere anymore or I could dig into this a little farther

I don't even know what a 4120 is. When I left the last Deere dealership - we were selling new 55 series tractors.

That being said - I had many new and old tractors on the dyno and playing with the injection timing had very little effect on horsepower. It had more of an effect on engine noise, smoke, heat, and cold-starting.

As Mr. Deere stated - turning up the fuel is a different issue. Deere sells several tractors with the same size engines - but at different power-levels. Some of that is due to only the fuel-delivery settings. But - Deere often had larger cooling systems installed with the higher-powered tractors tope with the increased power.

If there is something wrong with your tractor - and the original automatic timing advance is not working - then yes, you could be losing power. But, if it's working properly - you're not going to gain anything by changing it.

WELL THANKS FOR THE INFO.BUT I KNOW IF YOU LOOK AT THE SPECS, ALL THE TRACTORS IN THIS CLASS HAVE THE SAME ENGINES WITH THE DIFF. BEING HORSEPOWER OUTPUT (43 TO 58). MY TRACTOR HAS THE LOWEST OUTPUT,I WOULD LIKE TO PICK UP PTO HORSE POWER SO THE TRACTOR CAN HANDLE THE BUSHOG BETTER.AND THE TRACTOR ISN'T A HYDRO,BUT IS A POWER REVERSER.

Turning the pump up on a newer tractor with hyrdostatic isn't exactly a good idea. What the heck do you have to have 3 more horsepower for, anyway.

Maybe and just maybe depending on production tolerance. And if being tuned on a dyno. There might be 1-2% in some extreme circumstances. Delivery rate is another whole kettle of fish. If all other engine and chassis parts are identical to the next higher HP tractors. Then a careful tweaking on the dyno would be possible. The seat of the pants & eye on the smokestack dyno doesn't count.
