Just wanted to thank all who have given input to my questions on overhauling my 65 4020 Diesel powershift. After $5000.00 it just finished its break-in at the dealership. Rated at 85.4hp and sounds great. Now if the weather staightens up here in western WI. I can get her in the field.
Thanks guys,
Chuck

Sounds like they may have rated it at 540 RPM instead of the 620 where it should be checked.

I just checked on nebraska test site in january of 1965 a 4020 diesel was tested syncro AT 94.88 HP. Then to find a power shift I had to go to 1969 both of the 69s were gas . syncro was 96.66 ps was 95.66 1969 diesel ps was 95.83 they did not test a diesel syncro that that time. On the 3020 gas syncro 71.37 PS 67.13 4.24 diff. 2510 ps 49.57 syncro 53.74 a diff. of 4.17. In all of the test I could find were more then 4.24 diferent between the syncro and power shift Do you have an owners manual for your early 4020 Because in the specifications it should list rated PTO HP The nebraska test showed 83.79 hp at drawbar pulling 6396 lbs at 4.91 mph.

That tractor should be rated 94 hp and the powershift only takes 10hp during the shift cylce.

It was dynoed, thats how they broke it inand came up with 85.4hp. A 1965 powershift is rated at 83hp. Its 2.4hp over rating. Powershift trans. eats up about 10hp. Tractor sounds great and JD dealership was pretty happy with it. I want the tractor close to original specs, if I wanted more hp I would have gotten a bigger tractor.

Chuck, I'm thinking the Deere dealer might be blowing smoke up your exhaust, that tractor was rated 83 DRAWBAR HP, and should dyno an easy 95 HP, with newer, better technology on rings, pistons, etc.. With complete overhaul, including pumps and injectors almost always dyno at 95-100 and can be boosted to 110 without problems.

I don't know if being a power shift will drop the pto hp that much or not ? I have only dynoed a couple of 4020's and both of them I think made it to about 100 hp more or less without much trouble ? they were syncro ranges too. Their dyno could be off too or maybe your in a different altitude that will really mess with figures. If it starts good, runs good, doesn't smoke you out and does what you need of it then it really doesn't matter what the dyno says. I own a dyno and have only ran 1 of my own tractors on it to date.

A diesel and only putting out 85 hp ? I'd have it and/or the dyno checked.

I agree with Mike. If it's only putting out 85 horse it's sick. Something is not right. It should put out close to 100 or more. Mike
