late 4020 injector pump differences - pwr shift vs syncro

I am planning on upgrading the original small injector pump on my 1969 4020 diesel syncro to the larger JDB pump. Neighbor has a JDB pump that came off a late power shift 4020. On the web I discovered different part numbers for the power shift versus the syncro pumps.

What is the difference between these pumps? And can the power shift version be converted to work on a syncro tractor? Thanks.

Thank You All for clarifying the differences and providing the heads-up on timing. Good to hear it will work.

The differences are minor ones when they exist but you have to be careful on how you set the pump when you bolt it on the tractor. The timing marks mean different things between the different pumps. On some 4020s - Deere used the same pump for PowerShift or Synchro. On some others - pumps have slight variations in timing advance curve, housing pressure, timing marks, etc. The initial timings marks differ also - from early to late 4020s - regardless if PS or SYNC. I'm assuming you originally had something like a CBC633-24AL? If so - it has a full timing-advance of 16 engine degrees at 2400 engine RPM. And, when the timing pin it set in the timing hole - the engine fires at 0 degrees - i.e. TDC when cranking. So, when run at full load or RPM - total advance is 16 engine degrees BTDC. Later JDB633AL2404 for a PowerShift with timing marks lined up has engine firing at 5 degrees BTDC and has a total advance that goes 9 degrees more. So - total advance is 9 plus 5 - which comes to 14 degrees total advance. So, basically, if you install the JDB pump and line up the timing marks - your tractor will have 5 degrees advance when cranking - which might make it start a lot better in cold weather. When working it at high loads - it will have a just a hair less total advance than your old pump. If you want more - it is easily adjustable with the engine running via a little trimmer-screw.

If I remember right the powershift specs call for 2cc's more per 1000 strokes on the powershift pump when run on a test stand. Its been years since I once had every spec committed to memory. Just put it on and run it. No reason to be concerned about any difference. Its only in a very, very small difference in the pump output.

Greatnorth, to my knowledge the only difference is in the factory calibration of the leaf spring to add a little more power to the power shift tractor. It should work on your synchro tractor just fine. Perhaps jdemaris or someone else will know exactly. Mike
