My 59 JD 830 is transfering oil from the motor to the transmission. I replaced the pully side crank seal and thought I had it but NOT! Do I go for the fly-wheel side seal, maybe a crack in the casting between the two reservoirs. The tractor also has a power steering problem. Sector fills up under pressure and forces oil out around steering shaft (by the o-ring).

Randy, I put the powershaft seal in my 830 not too long ago. I had trouble with the fan drive, but while I had the timing case off, I went ahead and put the seal on the pto drive. My seal wasn't leaking but it was all hard and brittle. I'm sure I bought the seal from J.D. The job isn't hard just time consuming and greasy. Lord the muck in the bottom of the tranny. Be careful taking off the oil slinger, I bent mine a little bit using a gear puller. You can clean, check and adjust lots of stuff while you're torn down. Also, I think it would be a long time before you paid any price for simply doing nothing.

Randy, Here is some additional information we found. If you have a JD Service Manual look on pages 135-10-1 to 135-10-4 (Group 10 Power Shaft Drive Assembly). This gives a detailed explanation of removal, disassembly, etc. John Z.

Randy, My son had the same problem with his '59 830. The fix on his was to replace the seal on the power (and transmission oil pump drive) shaft that takes off from flywheel side of crankshaft. If you have a JD parts book look on page 70-2, part #13 - seal. This seal is no longer available from Deere, so you have to use 2 seals back to back from a "G". Not sure of part numbers, but you can get more information from Roger Marlin at 2 Cylinder Diesel Shop, Conway, Missouri. Ph. (417)468-7000 or (417)589-3843 or fax(417)859-6075. Gotta tell you now that this involves removal of the flywheel and timing gear housing. Hope this helps. Good luck. Get back to me if you need more information.
