1) are the bolts left hand thread(bolts seem to have the mark)

2) Should I remove the entire bar with blades, or just the blades? I removed the center bolt but the bar won't come out. Do I have to do something in the gearbox?

3) Tips? How do you manage this heavy thing? I can stand it up on end, but that's a big strain. How do you remove the blades normally?
Thanks

Mine has a main bar that is not straight, it is curved and the blades can swing free(if you hit something). So why won't the main bar come off when I remove the center nut?

Erik, odds are the center blade carrier is on a tapered shaft. A good lick with a hammer might be necessary or if that won't do it you will need a puller of some kind. But if you are just changing blades and bolts you won't have to remove the blade carrier. I would guess there is a large hole in the top of your cutter somewhere. This hole is for the removal of the blade bolts from the top. If there is not a hole one could be made easily that lines up with the blade bolts and would look "factory". Hope this helps. Mike

I can't say Erik. Maybe you need to try a puller. It would help if you confirmed the model number since I could not find the "602" model listed in the database at JDPARTS.

Could you have meant a JD 603? I can't find a 602 in the JD Parts database. For the 603, neither the center metric bolt, nor the the two blade holding bolts are referred to as LH thread. It does comment that you need to torque the center bolt to the gearbox to 333 ft-lbs. The two blade holder bolts are held by lock nuts.

There is a bit of a detailed illustration that you can refer to at AT JDPARTS.COM. You might want to take a look there.

As to how to handle it, you can safely prop it up, or tip it up on its side, but you have to judge how to work on it safely. I favor on its side up agaist a tree chained fast.
