Hi, I have a friend that has a john deere 60 1950s that he is trying to get going that was his dads, been sitting for about a year, Here is his problem, I will start, and run for about 8-10 mins then it shuts down, He said it smokes right before it stops, sounds good and everything Was running great just a week ago when he first started working on it.
He has changed plugs/gas
Seems like it's fuel/carb problem to me?
I hate to say it but I have nothing that new!
everything I have is 1937-39 so I thought maybe someone here would have a quick fix for him. He is just trying to get it going so he can sell it, but wanted to make sure it was running good before he listed it.
Thanks for any and all help!
Jeff

Does your the tractor have a low oil pressure fuel shut-off on it? I just had trouble with my starting engine, ran like a trooper for 45 sec, and then quit. I replaced the plugs, drained the carburator, thought I hadn"t drained the fuel tank last fall and finally replaced the two diaphrams on the fuel cut off. Bingo, started and ran smoothly/.

What is the voltage getting to the coil from the switch? There should be around 6 or 8 volts getting to the coil though the resistor while the switch is on and a full 12 volts while cranking and the resistor is bypassed. If full voltage is there while running after 10 minutes or so the condenser overheats and the points start to arc and the tractor dies. When it cools down the tractor starts back up.

First, put a timing light on it and see if it has spark while it is running down to the bitter end. If it does, then resolving fuel problems is your next stop.

Thanks will run that past him tonight, Like I said everything I have is old..like me and if it stops running I know I have a fuel problem that just needs a cleaning out. I did not want to mess up anything that new!

Well, now with your "old" stuff, you can lose spark, too. Now if it's a diesel, you have a whole 'nuther set of rules.....

Its gas,
Yes I have lost spark on my old 37B Was just the wires
But when he came over and asked for help on that 60 and I think it's a 1954 I thougt I better ask here first.
Nothing like looking like a old fart and messing it up worse for him.
Thanks

Replace the condenser and points. Cheap possible fix.

Another thing that it could be is the fuel tank has garbage in it and is blocking fuel flow. Perhaps your auto fuel shut-off is malfunctioning (tractors after #6028469 had these), or maybe you don't have enough oil pressure to keep the fuel shut-off from shutting down the tractor.

So, check your oil pressure if you have the auto shut-off. If your oil pressure looks good, i'd take apart the shut-off and install a new strainer and gasket and clean the glass out.
