The pulley brake on the A I am currently fixing up seems to be floppy lose. With the clutch all the way forward the brake pad still touches the pulley and I can move it quite a bit with my hand. When I pull the clutch back it disengages good and the brake pad stops the tractor pretty good. Seems like there is a lot of travel in the clutch arm though. Is this normal and if not how do I fix it? Will it hurt anything, think it’s been this way for many years as best I can remember.

Also the new pad I bought has rivets and the rivets or level with or above the facing, is that normal and wont they rub the pulley and wear off kinda quick?

Yep, JD parts is a great website, I have ordered several parts for my new 4700 from there. I also downloaded complete parts manuals for the 4010, 4020, 4700, MT, A, 60, and the 200 cultivators and the 212 planters, etc. Very good info and its free. Just wish I could get operators manuals and service manuals that easy and free, I got to get on dad about finding those.

Thanks again

Here is a direct link for folks to use to find JD parts;

That is a great website, I have spent considerable time reading through it but I didn't see the pulley brake article, very helpful info.

We had all of the service and parts and owners manuals for all of our tractors but when I moved last I gave them to dad and he put them "in a safe place", too bad we can't figure out where that is.

ALABAMA -- The brake pulley article is not up on the JD-H Site anymore and that is why I gave you the specific URL for the brake pulley. The webpage is still retrieveable, but only if you know the URL. You have to either cut-n-paste or copy and reenter. Here it is again. (PatB)

Alabama -- many Parts Catlogs for the older tractors are now available from the "jdparts" site. Here's how -- PatB
----- -----
Downloading a Parts Catalog from the “jdparts” site

NOTE: If you aren’t a subscriber & have no clue about signing in – go to Google; enter “jdparts”, and then select the John Deere Parts Homepage – you can take it from there without obligation of any kind except to obey the sites rules!

At left, move the cursor to “Start Searching Here”

The move cursor down a tad so it is over “John Deere Parts Catalog”. A small flag will appear out to the right saying, “Contains parts catalogs back to 1975. For older models, please contact your dealer.”

Click on the image of the catalog, and a new screen will appear saying, “John Deere Parts Catalog.”

Over in the space just under “model search”, enter the model designator. Example, the letter A. Then press ENTER.

A listing will appear showing all the catalogs for equipment items with the designation entered above. For styled model “A” tractors, select “675” – click on that line. A new, blank-looking screen appears – it the downloading screen.

You are now downloading the catalog! (Go get a drink – it may be a few moments or minutes depending on your receive rate).

The front page of PC675 Parts Catalog will appear when D/L is completed.

Move your cursor to the toolbar and observe the comments shown as you rest the pointer on each icon. One will say, “Click to save this file to your computer or other location.”

You now have a choice to make. You can store PC675 in your Documents area, or even to CD or other storage device. You now have a Parts Catalog for you Model “A” tractor! ++++

Alabama -- Perhaps a short visit to the JD-H Restoration Site (below) will spark you up to some alternate way of thinking.

And -- as has been pointed out, the clutch pulley brake has the single purpose of stopping the clutch pulley ONLY, not the tractor!

Further, when the tractor is out of gear, the clutch is to be engaged (forward) to prevent undo wear on the clutch pulley bushing -- all operator manual stuff. Enjoy! (PatB)

So the pad should not touch the pulley while the clutch is engaged?

The Pulley has a pretty good grove about 3” wide dug in the belt pulley, and the rivets stick up above the lining pretty far on the new pad. It came from Deerely Departed along with a steering wheel and carb kit before I found this website where I ordered an intake stack, muffler, decal kit, and exhaust pipe.

It's normal wear and tear. I have machined all the parts on my B pulley brake and yoke and now it functions tight and near perfect. It involves welding up the yoke shaft and inserting bushings in the pulley brake arm and the yoke block.

You should not be stopping the tractor with the pulley brake, as this wears out the parts twice as bad. Over the years, farmers used the pulley brake as a tractor brake, leaving huge ruts in the belt pulley... oh well.

Your new brake pad should NOT have rivets ABOVE the facing, as the rivets will dig into the belt pulley.

You mention that the pulley brake should not be used to stop the tractor. I have an early D and the only way I know to stop the tractor is to use the pulley brake. There are no other brakes?

And I rather imagine there is a substantial difference between the belt pulley brake on a "D" versus an "A" tractor. For the "A" tractor, the operator's instructions tell us not to stop the tractor with the pulley brake. That's pretty plain to me. (PatB)

Oh, ok, good! The green machines are different from what I am used to, the D being my first. To be honest, I was surprised when I realized it didn't have any wheel brakes! This forum has been very helpful to me. Thanks.
