My late 4020 PTO appears to be either on-off. As you move the lever the PTO engages at a certain point, and it engages without any "slippage". My dad's early 3020 seems to engage more smoothly when you move the lever... a lot easier on downstream gearboxes.
Is there anything behind this? PTO clutch wear? Internal pressures? Or is this just the nature of the machines?

Our '72 4020 utilizes hydraulic pressure to activate the PTO release bearing and requires a far more gentle hand to engage smooothly than the mechanically operated release bearing on our '69 4020 or 3020.

It can be feathered, it just takes more finesse.....

We have an early syncro 4010 and 4020, both have the clutch for the PTO just like the main clutch it can be slipped as gently as I want.
