I recently purchased a small farm in south Louisiana and know nothing about tractors. I'm retired military and decided to become a gentleman farmer, of sorts. I found a 1969 JD model 4020D which has had the engine overhauled. The owner wants $6200. If he puts on new tires and a paint job, the price goes to $9500. I've never owned a tractor and need help in determining value. I have not seen this tractor and know nothing other than what I show above. I know someone out there can help me with this one. As many as can, please give me some ball-park figure I can work from. Please use my e-mail address in replying as I don't know if I can find this forum again. Thanks a bunch.

The 4020 JOHN DEERE you describe could have an injection pump known as the Roosamaster "C" type pump. These pumps CAN NOT be repaired as a general rule and therefore must be replaced with a "JDB" type pump, this will cost somewhere around $1,000.00 to $1,500.00 to change. If this tractor has had this replaced already then you will not have any real problem. I would suggest that you visit your J/D dealer to get him to show you what to look for in this regard. If I can help you in any way just e-mail

I would consider $6200 a fair price for a 4020D that has been overhauled (are you sure? to what extent? does he have receipts to prove it?) Also, I prefer to buy (or at least SEE) a trctor, or a car, or a truck BEFORE the paint has been applied...paint can cover alot of sins. If the tires are fair, and the tin is straight and all there, buy it as is and paint it yourself. G
