Converted my 730 to alternator and negative ground. Alternator is charging (can put screwdriver to back of alternator and it is magnteized when running) but will not keep battery up. If I unhook battery the tractor dies. Where have I wired wrong? Anybody able to give me a schematic on how this should be wired? Thanx in advance.

JeffH, What kind of alternator did you put on? Was it a GM, FORD JD, or ? If it was a G.M. with an "internal" regulator (terminals on the side of the case facing - -)..The big terminal on the back (bat.) goes to the battery, the number 1 terminal goes to the controled side of the ignition s\w with a 10 ohm resistor or a small 12v light in series, the number 2 terminal goes to the big terminal on the back of the case ( the same one that goes to the battery). Put a volt meter on the battery when it is running and make sure that it is charging at least 14 volts at fast idle.

Thanx Clooney, this sounds more like it. I'll let you know in a few days how it worked out. We're working ground now and I can't stop the tractor long enough to rewire it. Work full time and trying to beat the next rain. Will just boost it off to get in the field. Thanx again. JH
