Bought a 2010RU to do bush hogging on about 9 acres. I thought a 46 HP tractor would be more then adequate for a 6 foot deck. The tractor dogs out and heats up to the red zone under load. Also have trouble getting enough RPM's to run the bush hog. Radiator is full, no debris on the radiator, carb and fuel lines have been checked and cleaned for proper flow. I've been told this tractor should not even know a 6 foot deck is behind it. Any suggestions to get more RPM;s and power would be greatly appreciated.

Had the same problem with a case 830. Found out my father replaced the spark plugs with ones that were way too hot.

First thoughts would be condition of radiator and water pump, any restrictions of the air supply system (especially if it is oil bath), then engine distributor and valve timing, then question what gears/range you are using to cut, maybe even engine oil pressure, then the condition of the gearbox of the brushhog. Then to the rear axle drives of the 2010 (fully lubricated?they are not lubricated by the transmission/hydraulic fluid). Come back if that doesn't fix and I'll see if there is more work I can talk you into..... ....

Rich
Sounds like a classic case of retarded timing. Of course it could be something else.

Thanks to all who offered help. The tractor timing was advanced about 40 degrees from spec, the carb was running lean and the governor spring was fatigued. I ran the tractor Saturday and it had guts and didn't overheat. All's well and thanks again.

Check 1)belt tightness 2}fuel mixture not too lean, 3)spark not retarded, 4)radiator core not scaled, 5)water pump impeller not sheared off. Would tell you to check the thermostat, but don't remember if they had one? Good luck.

Rich,
I have a 2010 gas and am very happy with it. I run a six foot brush hog and have no problems at all! There is no way that a six foot bruch hog should even slow your 2010 down. I wish I could help you with the heat problem. I'm sure once that's taken care of you will be very happy with your 2010. Good luck! Steve

You might want to do a compression check. My model A started doing that on me and I found the head gasket had burned through between the two cyl's causing loss of power and overheating, although the overheating was not extreme.

Dave. Have done a compression check, and for an old tractor, I think it's OK, here are the numbers. Cyl#1:150, cyl#2:125, cyl#3:125, cyl#4:110. Had an auto mechanic friend look at the tractor and he and I are questioning the responsiveness or lack of responsiveness of the governor. The carb throttle rod can be manually forced to get solid RPM's, but the tractor won't do it on its own.

RichB, You may have answered your own question. I had a 1010 years ago that did the same thing and the governor was the problem. Mine didn't overheat though. But, I didn't use it much in that condition. Nathan
