I am cleaning my carb for a JD Model 40 because I can not get it to idle and was wondering what all needs to be disassembled for cleaning. Do I remove the idle and load screws, brass seats, etc. What is the float setting? Also after it is put back together what are the intial settings for the load and idle screws? I know these are a lot of questions and I do have the original service manual but unfortunatley the instructions for rebuilding the carb are not in there. Thanks

Joe, pull out all the brass parts including the needle & seat, float, idle needle & jet, nozzle (if you can without damaging it) note which direction the venturi was installed before removing it. There is also a packing and retainer at the throttle shaft bore, if you are going to use an aggressive solvent remove it also. Clean the little fuel drain screen in the bottom of the air intake (do not remove it) also don't paint it shut when you paint carb. Check for throttle shaft to bore for wear also. To set float setting, install float then invert carb body then measure between float and carb gasket area it should be 1/4-9/32"... idle screw initial should be 2 turns out(appx)..there is no given initial for the load needle so start with it out about 1&1/2 turns then warm the engine then turn it in until the engine starts to miss then slowly back it out until the engine runs smoothly then an additional 1/2 turn out. Fast idle should be 2025 rpm.

Thanks. This was the kind of info I could not find in the service manual.
